I like the freedom to conduct any relevant experiments, do research, and use my skills to design tools/processes to help my department.

What I wish was different

It would be nice if they didn't have a 32 hour max work limit per week.

Advice

Don't waste any extra time you have! Use it for research or bettering yourself/your department.

R&D Intern

What I liked

The environment at 3M is second to none - engaging coworkers, interesting projects, significant support to ask questions but enough independence to grow, as well as dozens of classes and company events. They networked the interns fantastically well, and housed over 100 of us in the same building.

What I wish was different

Their rate of pay seems competitive, but their lack of covering housing costs cuts it back significantly. It's odd for a company of their size and prestige not to pay for housing for their interns.

Advice

If you go to 3M, go with an open mind and a willingness to take part in any opportunity. 3M is a place for growth and development.

What I liked

Good work environment, great company, a lot of self-directed work and independence in completing an impactful project.

Honestly, work conditions here were ideal; I wouldn't have changed anything (except maybe asking for more free food ;) ).

3M HIS is a great place to work! I'd recommend it out of any company I've ever worked at!

IT Intern

What I liked

I was assigned multiple projects that will actually be used by the company in the future. I was also able to experience a new city, Minneapolis, which was really exciting. I also enjoyed the culture and being able to talk to many people from different areas of the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known more people from my university there, but honestly I made so many new friends and connections it didn't really matter.

Advice

Embrace 3M culture and try and learn as much as you can about the different teams to determine what team you might like to work in full-time. Also be alright with not knowing everything going into the internship, you'll learn all the skills you need as you work on your project.

I worked with other college students so I was able to network with them as well as it was easy to relate and make friends with them.

There was mandatory overtime usually which was not in the job description.

Get to know your supervisors, leads, operators, and everyone you work with so you can create a network of people to help in your future endeavors.

I loved the company. The people there were very supportive and willing to help in any way they could. Everyone, from interns all the way to the CEO, were willing to meet with me and talk. They treated me like a real employee, allowing me to sit in on meetings and giving me real things to work on.

What I liked

The engineers I worked with were extremely personable, and I learned so much within a matter of three months.

What I wish was different

My housing was not compensated, so I paid for an apartment in both Warrensburg and Nevada. I wish there would’ve been a stipend.

Advice

It’s okay if you aren’t experienced with your major before going into an internship because you will learn so much within the workplace.

Marketing Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting to know all of the other interns and 3Mers and build my professional network. There were so many opportunities to connect with other employees regardless of my position as an intern in the Automotive and Aerospace Division. This allowed me to learn more about the company from various perspectives and learn about other positions within 3M.

What I wish was different

I wish I had 1 or 2 extended projects to work on throughout the entire summer. I was given 8 smaller projects that had a great deal of impact within my division, but I was not able to focus on one larger area and do a deep dive into any market research. However, many of my peers were able to do this in their internship positions in another division.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask senior leadership for advice! Lean on the more experienced employees around you - they are more than willing to help guide you in the right direction, and have so much knowledge to provide!

What I liked

My favorite part was that the projects I worked on made an impact, and I could see the difference my work was making in the plant. I learned so much about supply chain operations and the challenges that manufacturing plants face. The company culture at 3M is also very supportive of interns!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more time for training and networking with the other interns at 3M headquarters in St. Paul, MN.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up! You are there to make a difference, so don't be afraid to ask questions and propose new ideas.

Marketing Administrator

What I liked

I enjoyed my role at 3M. I learned a lot regarding marketing and economic research. I worked to develop a Strategic Marketing Plan for Emerging IOT (Internet of Things), which was a very fun and educational experience. I enjoyed having healthy work-life balance, and that my work was enjoyable. This summer served as a very educational and enriching experience, where I was able to fine tune not only my skill set in which I study here at Syracuse University, but also to strengthen my network and professional skills.

What I wish was different

I wish that, going into the role, we would have known more statistics on the percentage of interns hired per division, per intern role (sales vs. marketing vs. analytics) as well as the Graduation year of the interns hired. I wish that I knew this beforehand, as many of the other interns who had already graduated received offers at the end of the internship, whereas the interns (such as myself) who have yet to graduate received proportionally less offers. Too, many more sales interns were hired to be full time upon graduation/end of internship, where marketing interns were not. However, the hiring process of a company like 3M really depends on the internal health of the business, which I understand.

Advice

Make the most of your experience! Be ready to learn on your feet. You also never know where your work may go, or who you may come across. A VP of one of 3M's divisions reached out to meet me personally due to the quality of my individual work, which one of my superiors shared with others. Be prepared to apply your learning, but be very ready to learn more!

Design Engineer Intern

What I liked

They provided a lot of training (for CAD and in general). There were a lot of networking opportunities. The intern program was great. Everyone was friendly and willing to help.

What I wish was different

There was a steep learning curve and I wasn't given a real project until I was almost 6 weeks in (halfway). I wish I had been given my project much sooner (week 3) so that I could have accomplished more.

Advice

The design internship is 90% CAD work. It is for people who really enjoy the technical details of machines. Take advantage of the "informational interviews" 3M offers. It's a great way to network and get to know upper management, people in your department, and other departments so that you can find a good fit for you.
