Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Alexandria, MN

What I liked

I liked that I could finally have a hands on experience with the industry. It was very different from the school work I do; I was constantly talking to someone and working together, walking around the plant and observing the manufacturing process. I was very happy to be working in a multi-disciplinary team, which I usually do not have the chance to do at school. I was allowed more creativity throughout the internship, and I could improve my soft skills as well.

What I wish was different

My experience was more of an industrial engineering job, even though I major in Chemical Engineering. I really liked what I did during the internship, but I wish I could have worked with more chemicals.

Advice

Make sure to talk to people, ask questions and get involved. Do not be afraid to voice your opinion. Be curious about anything, try and learn as much as possible!

SEMS Lab Intern

July - August 2016 • Shanghai, China

What I liked

I liked the relative freedom I was given and the fact that I was working on something new in R&D as opposed to a pencil-pushing desk job.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been paid.

Advice

An international internship is great for the cultural experience and working alongside people of a different nationality. However, don't expect to be paid very much, or at all.

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

Had me doing real meaningful work. The people I worked with were awesome too.

What I wish was different

Maybe a little more mentoring from the experienced employees.

Advice

Do your best to study on your own to be affective.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Troy, NY

What I liked

The experience was wonderful! I was put on a real scrum team with other developers and got to participate in the entire software development process. The people there were very supportive and the work was engaging.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, the teams were very small and unused to the additional members, so occasionally there was not enough work to stay busy.

Advice

Be open and eager to ask questions. People generally like to tell you what they do and that information can be invaluable as an intern.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Midvale, UT

What I liked

My internship at 3M was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to work on interesting problems and bring value to the team with my work. None of my internship was busy work and I was excited to share my project with other teams and answer questions about it at the end of the internship.

What I wish was different

It took a week to get my work station set up which was frustrating.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and share your ideas. You are a fresh pair of eyes and your feedback is incredibly valuable to the company.

Data Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Murray, UT

What I liked

I got to work on large-scale projects with real impact on the company. While the problems were unstructured and difficult I felt that they aligned well with the skills I had from classes. My manager trusted me enough to let me work on things independently but was still available as a resource if I ran into problems.

What I wish was different

Not much honestly, the most I would say is that it took about a month to get put on a full project, but even then I had smaller things to work on until then.

Advice

Don't underestimate your existing network. I probably wouldn't have found this internship on my own because the company doesn't do a lot of on campus recruiting. A friend knew what I was studying and that it aligned with what her team needed in an intern. Talk about what you are learning with friends and family and mention that you are looking for internships and you may be surprised how many opportunities come from it.

Marketing Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

Great company, excellent manager. Large group of interns made moving to a new city less intimidating.

What I wish was different

More day to day work instead of two large projects would have given me a better idea of what it's like to actually work at the company.

Design Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • Maplewood, MN

What I liked

They provided a lot of training (for CAD and in general). There were a lot of networking opportunities. The intern program was great. Everyone was friendly and willing to help.

What I wish was different

There was a steep learning curve and I wasn't given a real project until I was almost 6 weeks in (halfway). I wish I had been given my project much sooner (week 3) so that I could have accomplished more.

Advice

The design internship is 90% CAD work. It is for people who really enjoy the technical details of machines. Take advantage of the "informational interviews" 3M offers. It's a great way to network and get to know upper management, people in your department, and other departments so that you can find a good fit for you.

What I liked

I was able to do software development, which is what I hope to do after graduation.
