Marketing Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

Great company, excellent manager. Large group of interns made moving to a new city less intimidating.

What I wish was different

More day to day work instead of two large projects would have given me a better idea of what it's like to actually work at the company.

Research and Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I like the opportunity to be in a completely new city, surrounded by completely new people, while doing a job that was completely new to me. This summer forced me to grow because I was constantly being pushed out of my comfort zone. I learned more than I thought was possible in just 12 weeks.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have interacted more with other interns in the program. I was very close to my coworkers that worked in the same department. With such a large company, interns were scattered throughout the company and there weren't many opportunities to collaborate. I wish I had taken more initiative to interact to interns in completely different areas.

Advice

While summer internships are about building a connection, gaining experience, and setting up your future, we young, aspiring professionals need to also have fun. I chose an internship that was so foreign to me, not because I knew I would succeed, but because I knew that I would learn and hopefully enjoy myself along the way. I do not think that opportunities to travel to new and different places for a few weeks, while being paid are going to come by frequently in my line of work, so I am so glad that I took advantage this summer.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Midvale, UT

What I liked

My internship at 3M was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to work on interesting problems and bring value to the team with my work. None of my internship was busy work and I was excited to share my project with other teams and answer questions about it at the end of the internship.

What I wish was different

It took a week to get my work station set up which was frustrating.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and share your ideas. You are a fresh pair of eyes and your feedback is incredibly valuable to the company.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Troy, NY

What I liked

The experience was wonderful! I was put on a real scrum team with other developers and got to participate in the entire software development process. The people there were very supportive and the work was engaging.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, the teams were very small and unused to the additional members, so occasionally there was not enough work to stay busy.

Advice

Be open and eager to ask questions. People generally like to tell you what they do and that information can be invaluable as an intern.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Alexandria, MN

What I liked

I liked that I could finally have a hands on experience with the industry. It was very different from the school work I do; I was constantly talking to someone and working together, walking around the plant and observing the manufacturing process. I was very happy to be working in a multi-disciplinary team, which I usually do not have the chance to do at school. I was allowed more creativity throughout the internship, and I could improve my soft skills as well.

What I wish was different

My experience was more of an industrial engineering job, even though I major in Chemical Engineering. I really liked what I did during the internship, but I wish I could have worked with more chemicals.

Advice

Make sure to talk to people, ask questions and get involved. Do not be afraid to voice your opinion. Be curious about anything, try and learn as much as possible!

Technical Aide

February 2018 • Maplewood, MN

What I liked

I do a large variety of tasks and have gained experience in technical skills, writing, and prioritization. My supervisors are flexible and consistently praise me when I've done well. I have worked on several different pieces of the same project over the time I've been here and so have become very invested in the results and the division I work in as a whole.

What I wish was different

There is no clear path into a full time position from this job. You have an advantage when applying to full time 3M jobs because you are an internal employee and it is significantly easier to network when you and those in the jobs you want to learn more about are already on the same campus for hours each day. The quality of the experience itself is likely highly dependent on your supervisors.

Advice

There are often several Technical Aide openings at a time, so definitely look to see which division of those available you are most interested in. This position continues during the school year and is not just over the summer.

What I liked

TONS of polymer opportunities. They make so many cool products that are used in the real world. Perfect blend of research and industry.

What I wish was different

The social events and professional development events for interns could have been planned and organized a little better. Still pretty good overall though.

Advice

If you are considering them at all, try to go here!

Quality Lab Engineer

May 2017 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

Flexible schedule, great staff

What I wish was different

I wish there was more structure with regards to engineering projects, and more assigned projects in general. I've worked there 2 years and there has been 1 assigned project, with 2 additional projects being something I had to initiate myself.

Advice

There is always opportunity to improve and get engaged if you want. For me, in the lab, my schedule was very flexible and I could sit around all day if I wanted to. Stay hungry to learn and initiate some projects!

Frontline Field Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

I loved this internship and this company. This was incredibly challenging and it pushed me to exceed my limits. I felt as though I did meaningful work and contributed to the company and my customers. Despite the fact that I was selling products I originally knew nothing about, I felt incredibly prepared and was given a multitude of tools to help prepare me for selling. I got real world field sales experience and had real responsibilities surrounding a robust curriculum. I would recommend to anyone that likes a challenge.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I think every aspect of this internship is calculated to perfection. It is tailored to fit the needs and skills of the interns.

Advice

Trust the process and stay focused. There will be opportunities to have fun, and I implore you to bond with your class and indulge responsibly. However, remember that you are there to work and you are building a professional personal brand for yourself. Stay humble and hungry.

Materials Handler

May - August 2019 • Hutchinson, MN

What I liked

The work was not too challenging. I had to keep an eye on safety at all times, however the work flow was generally pretty relaxed.

What I wish was different

The job required switching from a day shift, 7am to 3pm, to an evening shift, 3pm to 11pm, every other week. I preferred the day shift as then I didn't miss out on activities with friends and family in the evenings.

Advice

You simply move things around within the plant which became very monotonous very quickly. Just prepare yourself mentally as this will be your full time job for the time being.

Field Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

Valuable, hands on sales experience. Not really on training wheels, because I handled my own portion of my mentor’s territory.

What I wish was different

I was working remotely with no actual office or team, it was very field heavy and less collaboration in person, except from my mentor and manager.

Advice

If you want to challenge yourself, become a better influencer, and gain true sales experience - do this internship!
