3M

Environmental Health & Safety Intern

May - August 2019 • Nevada, MO

What I liked

The engineers I worked with were extremely personable, and I learned so much within a matter of three months.

What I wish was different

My housing was not compensated, so I paid for an apartment in both Warrensburg and Nevada. I wish there would’ve been a stipend.

Advice

It’s okay if you aren’t experienced with your major before going into an internship because you will learn so much within the workplace.

IT Intern

May - August 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I was assigned multiple projects that will actually be used by the company in the future. I was also able to experience a new city, Minneapolis, which was really exciting. I also enjoyed the culture and being able to talk to many people from different areas of the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known more people from my university there, but honestly I made so many new friends and connections it didn't really matter.

Advice

Embrace 3M culture and try and learn as much as you can about the different teams to determine what team you might like to work in full-time. Also be alright with not knowing everything going into the internship, you'll learn all the skills you need as you work on your project.

Medical Informatics Software Engineering Intern

May 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Good work environment, great company, a lot of self-directed work and independence in completing an impactful project.

What I wish was different

Honestly, work conditions here were ideal; I wouldn't have changed anything (except maybe asking for more free food ;) ).

Advice

3M HIS is a great place to work! I'd recommend it out of any company I've ever worked at!

R&D Intern

May - August 2019 • Maplewood, MN

What I liked

The environment at 3M is second to none - engaging coworkers, interesting projects, significant support to ask questions but enough independence to grow, as well as dozens of classes and company events. They networked the interns fantastically well, and housed over 100 of us in the same building.

What I wish was different

Their rate of pay seems competitive, but their lack of covering housing costs cuts it back significantly. It's odd for a company of their size and prestige not to pay for housing for their interns.

Advice

If you go to 3M, go with an open mind and a willingness to take part in any opportunity. 3M is a place for growth and development.

Field Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

Valuable, hands on sales experience. Not really on training wheels, because I handled my own portion of my mentor’s territory.

What I wish was different

I was working remotely with no actual office or team, it was very field heavy and less collaboration in person, except from my mentor and manager.

Advice

If you want to challenge yourself, become a better influencer, and gain true sales experience - do this internship!

Frontline Field Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

I loved this internship and this company. This was incredibly challenging and it pushed me to exceed my limits. I felt as though I did meaningful work and contributed to the company and my customers. Despite the fact that I was selling products I originally knew nothing about, I felt incredibly prepared and was given a multitude of tools to help prepare me for selling. I got real world field sales experience and had real responsibilities surrounding a robust curriculum. I would recommend to anyone that likes a challenge.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I think every aspect of this internship is calculated to perfection. It is tailored to fit the needs and skills of the interns.

Advice

Trust the process and stay focused. There will be opportunities to have fun, and I implore you to bond with your class and indulge responsibly. However, remember that you are there to work and you are building a professional personal brand for yourself. Stay humble and hungry.

Quality Lab Engineer

May 2017 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

Flexible schedule, great staff

What I wish was different

I wish there was more structure with regards to engineering projects, and more assigned projects in general. I've worked there 2 years and there has been 1 assigned project, with 2 additional projects being something I had to initiate myself.

Advice

There is always opportunity to improve and get engaged if you want. For me, in the lab, my schedule was very flexible and I could sit around all day if I wanted to. Stay hungry to learn and initiate some projects!

Technical Aide

February 2018 • Maplewood, MN

What I liked

I do a large variety of tasks and have gained experience in technical skills, writing, and prioritization. My supervisors are flexible and consistently praise me when I've done well. I have worked on several different pieces of the same project over the time I've been here and so have become very invested in the results and the division I work in as a whole.

What I wish was different

There is no clear path into a full time position from this job. You have an advantage when applying to full time 3M jobs because you are an internal employee and it is significantly easier to network when you and those in the jobs you want to learn more about are already on the same campus for hours each day. The quality of the experience itself is likely highly dependent on your supervisors.

Advice

There are often several Technical Aide openings at a time, so definitely look to see which division of those available you are most interested in. This position continues during the school year and is not just over the summer.
