Position Summary:
Career and Professional Development (CPD) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is seeking candidates for an Internship Program Assistant. The Internship Program Assistant is responsible for supporting Hume Center students participating in Virginia Tech’s on-campus internship program, Campus internEXP.
The mission of the Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology, which is part of the Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VT NSI), is to cultivate the next generation of national security leaders by developing and executing research, experiential learning, workforce development, and scholarship opportunities in the national security sector. Hume Center programs focus on the challenges of cybersecurity, secure communications, AI/ML, quantum computing, space and undersea programs, autonomy, resilience, and other mission critical areas of importance to national and homeland security.
The Professional Development and Experiential Programs team conceptualizes and executes programs, services, and resources that help Virginia Tech students gain meaningful career experiences, develop beneficial professional networks, and prepare for a successful transition into the workforce. Campus internEXP in as on-campus experiential learning program for undergraduate students. Students participating in this program are enrolled in a 0-credit course where they set learning objectives, complete professional development assignments and reflect on their on-campus internship. Campus internEXP also supports supervisors by providing training and information on best practices for hiring and supervising student interns.
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree. Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills, project/program coordination, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently while also collaborate and work on a team, and demonstrated adaptability and professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in or seeking a graduate degree in higher education, education, human resources, curriculum development, leadership or other related field. Willingness to contribute new ideas, experience with canvas or other learning management system, and experience with design software.
Job description:
- Manage the course section/course administration including re-write announcements to tailor to students, creating different discussion board questions, facilitate discussion boards and providing assignment feedback
- Engage with students through check-in meetings, respond to student concerns/coaching and plan and attend site visits (if appropriate)
- Lead and track attendance for Campus internEXP Information and Orientation Sessions for incoming students
- Serve on Intern of the Month and Intern of the Year review committee
- Create student spotlights for social media
- Collect and report data on Hume Center participation
