Where You Will Work
Interns are assigned to various locations in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Iowa, supporting our business in a variety of disciplines.
Description
Over the course of our 10-12 week internship experience you will have the opportunity to work directly with a mentor in Health & Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene while finding solutions to real world problems. Interact directly with our company leaders to discuss tactical steps to reduce workplace exposure and help keep our workplace safe and healthy. You will gain the skills and knowledge to become future leaders in the mining industry. Building a lasting professional network through social events and engaging activities.
Industrial Hygienists play a critical role in evaluating and reducing workplace exposures to physical and chemical hazards. As part of your internship, you will get hands on experience in:
- Collecting air, vapors, diesel particulate matter (DPM) acid mist, and dust samples for analysis in various environments including mine, processing and downstream processing operations.
- Helping analyze industrial hygiene data.
- Work alongside experienced health & safety professionals and hygienist to understand the various mining, processing or manufacturing processes and the hazards associated with these.
- Using data collection and monitoring equipment in the field including, dosimeters, air sampling pumps, field chemical testing kits, radiation etc...
- Helping increase compliance and developing solutions for exposure reduction.
- Assisting with conducting personal noise dosimetry and ventilation surveys for employees.
- Evaluating areas for safety compliance
- Collaborating with operations and site leadership to implement hazard controls.
- Creating sustaining health & safety programs
- Assisting groups in safety related concerns and apply regulatory standards (PELs, TLVs, etc.) and reporting findings along with any recommendations to eliminate and/or control safety and health hazards.
- Industrial Hygiene interns will have projects related to assessing the impact that a particular job or work environment could have on the health and well-being of our employees. Most projects would include assessing potential physical or chemical exposure risks and methods to mitigate those exposures.
- Performing other duties as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Full-time student currently enrolled at an accredited four-year university majoring in an appropriate Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene other closely related field; OR
- Recent college graduate having graduated within 12 months prior to internship start date with a degree in Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Possesses strong data analysis and problem solving skills
- Highly accurate and detail oriented
- Possesses strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrates initiative, organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure
- Demonstrates ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team
Criteria/Conditions:
- Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
- Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
- Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
- Work is in an office, mine, or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
- Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday
- Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
- Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/ alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory preemployment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable state laws
Compensation:
The estimated pay range for this role is currently $22.25 - $28.00/hour. Individual pay rates will be based on level of education and relevant experience.

Freeport-McMoRan has reviewed the jobs at its various office and operating sites and determined that many of these jobs require employees to perform essential job functions that pose a direct threat to the safety or health of the employees performing these tasks or others. - Site-based positions, or positions which require unescorted access to site-based operational areas, which are held by employees who are required to receive MSHA, OSHA, DOT, HAZWOPER and/or Hazard Recognition Training; or
