Technology Transfer Intern

 

The Research and Technology Partnerships Office at Jefferson Lab helps our staff move their innovations from the lab to the market. RTPO serves as the strategic partnerships office as well as the sponsored research office, helping lab staff connect with opportunities to increase the reach and impact of our important work. In addition to building capacity for innovation at the lab, our team performs marketing analysis, business development, and partnership outreach efforts to facilitate the effective transfer of technologies to industry via licensing and partnerships agreements. Helping new inventions and discoveries succeed in the real world is one of most rewarding aspects of the commercialization process.

We are seeking a student intern to learn about and contribute to the tech transfer and partnerships mission at the lab. Your work will be varied. It may include performing internet research to develop an opportunity landscape for a particular technology, or supporting innovation workshops and other events. You'll also have the opportunity to work hands on with technology to improve back-office business tools and systems. If you have an interest in science, technology, business management, entrepreneurship, startups, or research and development, consider joining our team as a Tech Transfer Intern!

In this role you will:

  • Perform market research using a wide variety of sources such as industry websites, trade publications, SEC filings, patent search tools, and newspapers. Conduct phone interviews and surveys for business development, and customer development purposes.
  • Aid in updating the external and internal websites for the division to include contact forms, event calendars, and other communications vehicles. Draft and edit interview scripts, marketing collateral, and other written content.
  • Practice technical and software development skills on real business applications. Assist in maintaining and updating software tools such as patent portfolio database, proposal development platform, and CRM.
  • Assist in analyzing and evaluating opportunities for commercial application of lab-owned intellectual property (patents and copyrights).
  • Support events and programs with logistics, setup, tear down, and promotion.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Must be a full-time college student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM or business-related field with a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must be available to work 15-20 hours per week during the school year
  • Must be U.S. Person

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable with cold-outreach techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Familiarity with lean startup methodology, design thinking, and systems thinking approaches
  • Comfortable exploring software tools and systems
  • Curiosity for new science and technology developments
