3D Scanning Studio Student Assistant - Fall 2024

The 3D Scanning Studio, which offers free 3D scanning services to all library patrons, is seeking a 3D Scanning Student Assistant. The 3D Scanning Student Assistant will use tools provided by the studio to scan physical objects and refine the resulting digital model. Prior experience with 3D scanning or modeling is not required, but competent knowledge of 3D modeling tools and software is preferred.

The University Libraries Studios Network consists of spaces intended to teach and advise library patrons interested in the tools and technologies used in creation processes. Student employee positions entail interacting with all patrons of the studio, regardless of race, gender, or status, in a welcoming and friendly manner. Patrons will range from those with no experience with technology to those very familiar with the equipment and software that the Studios provide access to. Job duties:

  • Interact with all users and library patrons in a friendly manner, regardless of skill level
  • Advise users with inquiries involving the creation processes fostered by the Studios
  • Use, maintain and troubleshoot 3D scanning equipment and software
  • Communicate regularly with Studio manager, Studios Network Coordinator, and Studios Network Assistant. 
  • Maintain the Studio through daily tasks including: interacting with Studio users in person and via email, managing technology inventory and bookings, cleaning and repairing technologies, maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming Studio environment, and reporting regular usage data via online forms.

Training: 

  • Training on all equipment will be provided. Prior experience with 3D scanning is not required but knowledge of relevant equipment and 3D modeling software is helpful.

Required qualifications:

  • Full-time student at Virginia Tech

Preferred qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Desire to teach others about creation software, technologies, and processes.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling software and other tools used in the Studios.
  • Desire to learn new technologies and develop new skills
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people in a friendly manner
  • Ability to work independently without supervision
  • Desire to participate in unique projects given to the Studio by University partners.
  • Flexible working hours



Starting pay: $14.00/hour
