SOAR Interns work alongside the Student Opportunities and Achievement Resources (SOAR), a Unit of the Office for Inclusion and Diversity, team as a referral resource in supporting undergraduate student achievement. SOAR interns will connect peer students with campus resources and programming to enhance the overall collegiate student experience in the areas of: holistic support, personal and professional development, and retention and advocacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR INCLUSIVE VT INTERNS:

  • Assist in developing an inclusive environment that is open to all points of view.
  • Assist, as needed, with the coordination and facilitation of new and existing programs and initiatives designed to strengthen the Office for Inclusion and Diversity’s commitment to being a diverse, inclusive, and engaged community of learners. Programs include but are not limited to Black College Institute, JumpStart, Sankofa, and the #StayReady Series.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled departmental training and professional development meetings.
  • Collaborate with other InclusiveVT interns, faculty, and staff as we work together to enhance the student experience.
  • Engage in the planning, executing, and assessing of programmatic cultural activities and events that supplement curricular experiences.
  • Exercise good judgment in representing the university and uphold institutional standards.
  • Foster a sense of community and trust by modeling appropriate risk-taking, self-disclosure, and confidentiality.
  • Maintain consistent and timely correspondence with supervisory staff.
  • Serve as a role model exhibiting enthusiasm, motivation, and involvement.
  • Other duties as assigned by SOAR Professional Staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This is an entry-level position. On-the-job training will be provided. However, a competitive candidate will be willing to learn about the importance of the Office for Inclusion and Diversity's work and will be ready to engage in continuous professional development to expand personal knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated leadership experience and academic achievement. Candidates should demonstrate a mature and friendly attitude and possess sound decision-making skills. A desire to assist students in personal growth and success is necessary. In addition, the successful candidate must:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate student in Good Academic and Good Conduct Standing, as deemed by the policies managed by the Office of Undergraduate Academic Integrity and the Office of Student Conduct, respectively.
  • Be able to work for a maximum ten (10) hours each week.
  • Be able to occasionally support the SOAR Office during events that may occur in the evening and on weekends.
  • Be able to work the entire 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Maintain a 2.75 or higher Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Maintain a positive attitude with team orientation.
  • Be involved in Virginia Tech’s academic and co-curricular programs.
  • Be willing to learn general knowledge about Virginia Tech.

COMPENSATION:

  • Receive monetary compensation at $12 per hour, not exceeding 10 hours per week.
  • Develop invaluable leadership skills and experience working with small and large groups and diverse backgrounds, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Foster professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community stakeholders.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Applications will be available on Friday, March 8, 2024, on Handshake.
  • Applications will close on Monday, April 8, 2024 (11:59 p.m. EDT).
  • Applicants will be notified of interview decision on or around Friday, April 12, 2024
  • Interviews will be the week of April 22, 2022.
  • Applicants will be notified of selection on or around May 1, 2024.
  • InclusiveVT Interns will have a start date of August 26, 2024.
