Summer Co-op/Metabolomics and Lipidomics Research

GSK

Department Description:

Biological Mass Spectrometry, as part of Discovery Biology at GSK applies world-class expertise and cutting-edge mass spectrometry technologies to help discover and progress potential drug molecules, provide relevant insight into target biology, and how our molecules affect cellular systems. Housed within Biological Mass Spectrometry is a state-of-the-art metabolomics and lipidomics capability that aims to gain a better understanding of how novel drugs impact disease through studying changes in metabolite and lipid pools, and to aid in the design of better therapeutics by defining mode-of-action and off-target impacts.

Job Description:

A Co-op position is available at GSK within the Biological Mass Spectrometry Team to learn, develop, and implement advanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technologies and techniques for metabolite and lipid analysis in support of the drug discovery pipeline. This individual will work closely with experienced mass spectrometrists to first learn the fundamentals of metabolite and lipid analysis by mass spectrometry, while getting exposure to early discovery research processes and how this technology is directly applicable to the pharmaceutical industry. This will be followed by exploring and implementing novel methods with the overall goal of increasing the ability to profile metabolite and lipid pools to aid in defining target biology and drug pharmacology.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, and communication skills; innovative, self-motivated, and highly adaptive behaviors; detail oriented.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the assignment.
  • Must have an active student status and/or be within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or course work in liquid chromatography and/or mass spectrometry.
    • Experience processing and visualizing large data sets.
  • Experience with chemical derivatization of analytes prior to mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Preference for an individual available for 6-12 month period.

Benefits:

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend.
