R&D Can End Stock Co-Op

Position Overview

The Novelis Kennesaw R&D team is seeking a Can End Surface Treatment Co-op. The person in this role will report to the Lead Scientist/ Lead Technologist, Surface & Coatings. The ideal candidate will be responsible for design and execution of experiments to understand the evolution of various sheet metal surfaces throughout their manufacturing processes. Based on the understanding of surface characteristics of incumbent and various new alloys, this position will provide criteria to evaluate surfaces of metals used in can end products, and surface treatment recipes to meet those criteria.

 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in commissioning the automated surface treatment line for can end sheets (CES) 
  • Design and execute experiments to understand surface characteristics of CES produced by current and various new alloys, and at different steps of manufacturing processes 
  • Establish criteria of good cleaned and pretreated surfaces for each metal source 
  • Develop cleaning and pretreating recipes to meet those criteria. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Chemical Engineering or Materials Science. 
  • Currently enrolled in a 4-year program or working towards post graduate degree 
  • Basic knowledge on metal microstructure or metal surface characteristics 
  • Understanding of design of experiment. 
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting. 
  • Aptitude for safe handling of chemicals and equipment. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Experience with materials characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy (SEM), topographical evaluation, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), optical emission spectroscopy, etc.; strong preference for hands-on experience and understanding of working principles of these techniques. 
  • Good understanding of reaction engineering
