POSITION SUMMARY:
Have a passion for leveraging project management skills to drive the successful delivery of projects?  As a co-op/ intern at Amtrak, you will learn the foundational principles in project management and make tangible impacts on complex, transformational projects in a real-world rail industry environment.  You will work under close supervision of a senior program manager, and in collaboration with all levels of stakeholders:  from department leaders to project/program managers, analysts, and functional leads.  Individuals in this role use project management knowledge and analytical skills to support assigned projects, including:

  • Supporting project planning, analysis, and performance reporting
  • Creating and maintaining project artifacts and ensuring appropriate document and administrative controls
  • Working with project team members and subject matter experts to coordinate logistics for assigned projects and activities
  • The co-op/intern selected for this opportunity will join the New Acela high speed trainset program team, which has capstone responsibilities for the multi-billion dollar high priority and high visibility effort, including implementation, integration, and business perspectives


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Engage in fast paced learning of the New Acela high speed trainset program, with a focus on the Workforce Readiness workstream within the Program Readiness area.  Both the primary trainset vendor and Amtrak will transition from training planning to training execution during Summer 2024.  The co-op/intern will assist the program Workforce Readiness leader in leading, managing, and coordinating activity related to over 10 training groups and areas.  Specific work efforts will include:
  • Supporting and updating specific training plans
  • Framing and updating training schedules
  • Coordinating and ensuring completion of key training enablement and execution activities
  • Generating and populating training status reporting
  • Updating the Workforce Readiness strategy document as required
  • Documenting notes and key takeaways from workstream meetings
  • Updating and managing workstream document repositories
  • Assisting in the updating, tracking, and reporting of project budget
  • Support project teams with project status reporting, documentation, controls, and other processes to ensure compliance with best practices, department procedures, and enterprise standards
  • Coordinate project logistics, including calendars, major events, meetings and applicable materials and equipment
  • This co-op/internship represents an exciting opportunity to learn and contribute to the success of a fast-paced program, focused on training, touching well over 4,000 employees that is critical to the launch of Amtrak’s newest high speed trainset service

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
• Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Project Management, Business, Management, Economics, Engineering, Science, Mathematics, Organizational Research, or Operations Analysis
• Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Relevant work experience (e.g., internships, school jobs)
• An interest in the program and project management as a corporate practice
• Excellent verbal and written skills
• Positive attitude that presents in interactions with program leaders and partners
• Microsoft Office experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project)
• Analytical skills


COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

The hourly range is $19.50 per hour – $22.10 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.  In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
