SoMD 2030 is focused on building up the STEM pipeline, increasing career opportunities and expanding partnerships with government, industry, and academia. This collaborative effort is funded by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aviation Division (NAWCAD). The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) executes this workforce development initiative via its Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) with NAWCAD. SoMD 2030 funding was awarded in October 2022 due to continued efforts focused on workforce development by the Southern MD Navy Alliance. 

This initiative connects talented college students with paid internships in southern MD via college internship opportunities with local industry, government and nonprofits – leading to further education and career opportunities across southern - in St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles Counties. 

 We are seeking college students (rising sophomores - seniors) who are - 

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Software Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Communications, Psychology or a related field at an accredited undergraduate institution  
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Possess strong analytical, research, and communication skills that demonstrate capacity for critical thinking
  • Have a desire to learn and explore new skills, technologies
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent U.S. resident
  • Optional: experience with MATLAB, Solidworks, AutoCAD, etc.

The inaugural cohort of 40 interns during Summer 2023 worked at 31 different companies in southern Maryland.  A list of the companies and types of internships are listed below.
