Boeing Research & Technology Graduate Researcher –Atmospheric Scientist, Sustainability & Future Mobility Engineer Internship

Join our exclusive Graduate Researcher Program (GRP) in Boeing Research & Technology during the summer of 2024 and you can build something better for yourself, for our customers and for the world. The intent of the Boeing Graduate Researcher program is to invite participants back for repeated work experience opportunities and offer a full-time position post PhD graduation.

Boeing Research & Technology is Boeing's global research and development team creating and implementing innovative technologies that make the impossible possible and enabling the future of aerospace. We are engineers, skilled scientists and thinkers, bold innovators and dreamers. 

You will work with other Boeing engineers in a mentoring and collaborative mode in order to address research and development challenges. You are expected to have the ability to analyze and develop solutions to complex problems, have good team collaboration and excellent communication skills.

Over the course of the 10-12 week summer program you will have the opportunity to:

The following BR&T positions are available for the 2024 GRP program.  When applying, please identify the positions you are interested in and qualified for.

  • Atmospheric Scientist (1 position) - Hybrid
  • Sustainability & Future Mobility Engineering (1 position) - Hybrid
  • Artificial Intelligence (2 positions) – On-Site

Some of these positions are expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Some of these positions are hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.  This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

Basic Qualifications for all positions (Required Skill/Experience):  

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a Doctorate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field of study
  • The ability to work a minimum of 10 weeks (12 weeks preferred) during the summer of 2024.
  • Completed first year of PhD studies by July 2024

Other Job Related Information / Qualifications:

Atmospheric Scientist: Boeing’s Sustainability & Future Mobility (S&FM) mission is to leverage rapid advances in energy, power, and autonomy technologies to connect the world with safe & sustainable air transportation. We are looking for an atmospheric science graduate student with good knowledge of aerosol-cloud-interactions and who has some prior programming experience. As a graduate researcher on the S&FM team, you will be a part of shaping our contrail modeling projects forward, with the overall goal to help identify modeling improvements that are needed to obtain more accurate contrail persistence predictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in an atmospheric science related field with a solid background in physics and/or chemistry.
  • Familiar with analyzing climate/weather prediction model output, using satellite datasets to validate model outputs, and have some familiarity with in-situ observation techniques and datasets.
  • Familiarity with Python and UNIX-type environments.
  • Experience with manipulating large datasets

Sustainability & Future Mobility Engineering: Boeing’s Sustainability & Future Mobility (S&FM) mission is to leverage rapid advances in energy, power, and autonomy technologies to connect the world with safe & sustainable air transportation. As a PhD researcher on the S&FM team, you will be involved with our Future Flight Concepts, Lifecycle Assessment, or aviation emissions modeling (Cascade: http://sustainabilitytogether.aero) projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program such as Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering
  • Experience with basic aircraft configuration, modeling & simulation, lifecycle assessment, software development with model-based back-end, lifecycle assessment, sustainability principles, research & technology development
  • Entrepreneurial mindset

Artificial Intelligence: We are looking for motivated Artificial Intelligence Graduate Student Researchers with at least three of the following experiences:  programming, data understanding and processing, machine learning development, software/neural networks verification and validation. The selected candidate will assist in R&D and rapidly prototype advanced computing technologies for aerospace products and services. The candidate will be comfortable taking initiative, learning by experience; they will possess an interest in personal learning, seek feedback from others, and create innovative ideas. The intern could be part of the AI/Autonomy, Language Technology, or AI Safety Assurance team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program involving AI/ML research or application
  • Experience in developing and deploying software programs
  • Experience in developing and evaluating learned models, including data prep
  • Experience with scripting languages for prototyping such as Python, MATLAB, and R
  • Experience with programming languages such as C++, C, and Java
  • Experience with software/neural networks analysis, testing, simulation, verification and validation

Summary pay range: $76,000– $88,000
