Boeing Research & Technology Graduate Researcher – Applied Mathematics, Statistics & Operations Research

Join our exclusive Graduate Researcher Program (GRP) in Boeing Research & Technology during the summer of 2024 and you can build something better for yourself, for our customers and for the world. The intent of the Boeing Graduate Researcher program is to invite participants back for repeated work experience opportunities and offer a full-time position post PhD graduation.

Boeing Research & Technology is Boeing's global research and development team creating and implementing innovative technologies that make the impossible possible and enabling the future of aerospace. We are engineers, skilled scientists and thinkers, bold innovators and dreamers. 

You will work with other Boeing engineers in a mentoring and collaborative mode in order to address research and development challenges. You are expected to have the ability to analyze and develop solutions to complex challenges, have good team collaboration and excellent communication skills.

Over the course of the 10-12 week summer program you will have the opportunity to:

The following BR&T positions are available for the 2024 GRP program.  When applying, please identify the positions you are interested in and qualified for.

  • Mathematics Applications (1 position) - Hybrid
  • Operations Research (2 positions) - Virtual
  • Statistics (1 position) - Virtual

Some of these positions are hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.  This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

Some of these positions have been identified as virtual opportunities and do not require applicants to live in close proximity to a Boeing facility.

These positions must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required.  “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Some of these positions requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.

Basic Qualifications for all positions (Required Skill/Experience):  

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a Doctorate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field of study
  • The ability to work a minimum of 10 weeks (12 weeks preferred) during the summer of 2024
  • Completed first year of PhD studies by July 2024
     

Other Job Related Information / Qualifications:

Mathematics Applications: We are looking for a PhD candidate in applied math, physics, computer science/engineering, quantum computing or related fields with the ability to apply mathematical software development and deliver best practices to business and engineering applications. The candidate is expected to have the ability to analyze and develop solutions to complex problems, grasp business and engineering challenges, formulate, analyze, interpret and communicate results to the business and engineering communities. An ideal candidate will have a passion for developing and delivering mathematical applications that solve real world engineering challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD candidate in applied math, physics, computer science/engineering or related fields.
  • Experience with modeling and optimization algorithm design and implementation.
  • Software programming skills and/or knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python, C, C++, Java, etc.
  • Experience with mathematical, scientific or engineering applications development.
  • Knowledge of container and cloud-based deployment methodologies is a plus.
  • Experience with quantum computing compilers and/or developing in Qiskit is a plus but not required.
  • Strong desire to work with technical and non-technical audiences and be a self-starter.
  • Ability to manage several simultaneous projects effectively and across various geographical locations.

Operations Research: As applied mathematicians, we lead in evaluating, creating and applying mathematical algorithms and tools in harnessing emerging technology into innovative products and services as well as solving business challenges. The successful candidate will serve as a technical consultant and researcher and will develop solutions and work across the enterprise in the area of operations research.  The tasks performed will be to develop solutions and software to solve complex challenges supporting current research and consulting needs. We are looking for candidates with the ability to evaluate resources to solve mathematical problems, assist with research, develop solutions and implement algorithms in code, and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing PhD in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong operations research skills, including discrete optimization, stochastic modeling and optimization, and/or computational math focused on OR applications
  • Strong software programming skills and experience of programming languages such as Python, C, C++, and/or Java
  • Experience with mixed integer optimization solvers, such as Gurobi, CPLEX or others
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and work statements
  • Ability to work on multidisciplinary teams and a strong desire to work with technical and non-technical audiences and be a self-starter
  • Passion to develop operations research methods in research & development and apply operations research to develop industrial solutions.
     

Statistics: As applied mathematicians, we lead in evaluating, creating and applying mathematical algorithms and tools in harnessing emerging technology into innovative products and services as well as solving business challenges. The successful candidate will serve as a technical consultant and researcher and will develop solutions and work across the enterprise in the area of statistics.  The tasks performed will be to develop statistical solutions supporting enterprise research and consulting needs, collaborate with other mathematicians and engineers to develop statistical problem formulations, develop solutions, and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences. The successful candidate will evaluate resources to solve mathematical and statistical challenges, assist with statistics research, develop solutions, code and maintain statistical software, and communicate results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematical science, or other related field
  • Strong statistics skills
  • Strong statistical programming skills (R, Python, SAS, or JMP)
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and work statements
  • Ability to work on multidisciplinary teams and a strong desire to work with technical and non-technical audiences and be a self-starter
  • Passion to develop statistical methods in research & development and apply statistics to industrial challenges

Summary pay range: $76,000 – $88,000.
