Social Media and Events Intern-OMALS Program

The Online Master’s Program in Agriculture and Life Sciences (OMALS) is a 100% online master’s program which contains eight concentrations for students to choose from: 
  • Agribusiness
  • Applied Animal Behavior and Welfare
  • Applied Nutrition and Physical Activity
  • Education
  • Environmental Science
  • Food Safety and Biosecurity
  • Leadership Studies
  • Plant Science and Pest Management

OMALS students are located all over the country and are often working professionals who are looking to level up in their career or even make a change to something completely new. OMALS has been growing steadily year over year for the last 7 years under the leadership of Assistant Director, Jennifer Jones, and it is an exciting time to be a part of its growth and success. We are looking for an intern who is ready to share their great communication and marketing skills to help us continue to grow!

Position Overview:
This paid internship runs for Fall 2023 (with potential to run through 2023-2024 academic year depending on intern availability) at $15.00 per hour, and the internship will consist of 10 hours per week during the semester. There will be weekly meetings with the Assistant Director of OMALS based on schedule availability, and full training will be provided on the OMALS program, university brand standards, and communications policies. Dress code is considered “dress for your day policy” (casual for most days, business casual for meetings and events). This is an on-site internship, though remote work will be necessary as well, especially for the social media component.

Job Description:
Internship duties will include:
  • Manage social media platforms: linkedin, facebook, instagram
  • Contribute to development of social media calendar and post content regularly which includes the creation of graphics, knowledge of program deadlines, recruitment schedule, etc
  • Engage with all social media platforms to keep pages up to date and active
  • Create reports on social media analytics for OMALS team
  • Plan and assist in implementation of graduate recruitment events and join events in to field questions including digital marketing and swag ordering 
  • Attend face to face marketing events on campus
  • Create all required digital and print media for any current marketing campaigns with outside vendors
  • Assist with compilation of necessary documents (pictures, graphics, etc) for ongoing marketing campaigns with outside vendors 
  • Print marketing and program materials as needed
  • Mail marketing and program materials to incoming students and graduates

Required Qualifications:
Social Media Experience on a variety of platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)

Preferred Qualifications:
Graphic Design experience and familiarity with university graphic design programs

Necessary Skills:
  • Excellent communication skills with a variety of stakeholders (prospective students, current students, faculty and staff)
  • Team player able to contribute to group problem solving
  • Motivated self-starter who is willing to learn
  • Ability to work independently to achieve program/team goals

Who will you be working with:
As the Social Media and Events Intern, you will work closely with Jennifer Jones, the assistant director of OMALS, who has grown the program tremendously in just a few short years. Jen is an innovative thinker who is always creating new ways to improve the experience of being in OMALS. She is known for her upbeat and optimistic personality and always loves new ideas, so bring yours! Jen has been an educator in K12 and in higher education for over 20 years. You will also have a chance to collaborate with the office of academic programs in CALS, which is home to the academic dean, Dr. Susan Sumner, and a team of about 10 other academic and student affairs professionals.

The social media and events intern will learn the process of developing an effective communications plan from recruitment to graduation as communicated across all media channels including web, print, social, email, and more. You will have the opportunity to create, post, and publish graphic content for a large interdisciplinary degree program at the college level within Virginia Tech. The internship will give you opportunities to engage with program, college, and university leadership and outside of the university with engaged professional marketing firms, and take part in live (virtual and in person) marketing events with opportunities to network with other marketing and recruitment professionals across the university and beyond.
