Career Outfitters Student Coordinator

The student coordinator works collaboratively as a co-coordinator for the Career Outfitters program and shopping event in Career and Professional Development (CPD) at Virginia Tech. CPD educates and supports students as they explore and further understand themselves and career options, gain valuable experience, develop as professionals, and launch their post-graduation career plans. We want to help students discover and pursue a path to a fulfilling career. We do this through career advising services, workshops and presentations, and high impact programs. Helping students along their career development journey is why we come to work every day.
 
Job Description:
 
  • Lead 1:1 student shopping appointments and assist students by providing style and fit advice, and alteration recommendations
  • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive shopping environment
  • Merchandise clothing, shoes, and accessories in the Career Outfitters closet, pop-up shops, workshops, and any special events
  • Maintain Career Outfitters closet and donation area by sorting and organizing donated clothing (incoming donations) and either merchandise items into the closet or label and prepare to send to other local organization
  • Contact and coordinate with local businesses and other community partners to secure clothing donations, discounted services, gift cards, etc.
  • Co-manage and create Career Outfitters social media content throughout the year
  • Assist with marketing and promotions of the program and donation drives
  • Communicate and follow-up with donors and sponsors through phone, email, hand written thank you notes, etc.
  • Assist with special projects, including sustainability and accessibility initiatives
  • Co-present/facilitate special workshops and presentations
  • Assist with setup, preparation, and facilitation of special events, workshops, and projects 
  • Additional project opportunities as they arise
 
Position Overview:
  • This paid internship ($12/hr) runs the 2023-2024 academic year, beginning August 2023
  • The intern will meet bi-weekly with the Program Coordinator
  • Work up to 10-12 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday (with some possible after-hours work)
  • Training will be provided on program and special event details, Career and Professional Development policies and procedures, interviewing dress codes, professionalism, career fair and interviewing preparation, merchandising, styling, and inclusive practices
  • A consistent weekly schedule will be determined at the beginning of each semester
  • Position is on-site and in person 
  • Dress for your day policy (smart casual or casual for most days, business casual for meetings and events)
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience with a publication software (InDesign, Photoshop, Publisher, Canva, etc.)
  • Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs while climbing a ladder
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fashion Merchandising and Design (FMD) student at Virginia Tech
  • Retail and merchandising experience
  • Styling, measuring, and/or alterations knowledge or experience
  
Necessary skills include:
Strong communication skills, project/event management experience, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently while also collaborating and working on a team, willing to contribute new ideas, adaptability, professionalism, time management, and a spirit of Ut Prosim!
 
Who you will be working with:
As the Student Coordinator, you will be joining a team of ~30 career services professionals and ~30+ student employees dedicated to student career development. CPD values teamwork and collaboration, clear and kind communication, and a positive work environment. Working in CPD is fast-paced, highly interactive, and student driven. We celebrate our team and recognize a job well done. 
 
The Student Coordinator for Career Outfitters reports to the Program Coordinator who coordinates numerous professional development and experiential learning programs for students. The Program Coordinator has assisted with Career Outfitters since its inception and was once the Student Coordinator herself. She held various positions in the fashion and event industries, including retail management, professional fashion and custom stylist, event planner, and advertising/marketing account executive before coming back to Virginia Tech to work in CPD. The supervisor loves all things fashion, creating timelines, color-coding, and building relationships with students, local employers, and faculty.
