Campus internEXP - Graphic Design Intern

The Graphic Design Intern will work for the Communications and Industry Relations Manager at the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC). Position Overview:
  • This paid internship ($13/hour) is a semester-long opportunity beginning August 2023 with the potential to extend to the Spring 2024 semester
  • Work 10-12 hours a week during the spring semester (flexible) between the hours of 9 AM - 4 PM, Monday-Friday 
  • A weekly schedule will be set at the beginning of the semester
  • The position is on-site with the opportunity for some remote work
  • Dress for your day policy (casual for most days, professional for any meetings and events)
  • Training will be provided for MLSoC procedures

Job Description:
  • Assist with graphics needed for major school events including Career Fair, Capstone Presentations, Industry Advisory Board Meetings, Awards Banquet, Hardhatting Ceremony
  • Design a cohesive look for each event with opportunities for growth
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create graphics for social media campaigns

Required Qualifications 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Previous experience with graphic design
  • Use of discretion with confidential records

Preferred Qualification
  • Student is junior or senior status at Virginia Tech
  • Social media graphic design experience
  • Knowledge of the construction industry

Necessary Skills Include:
  • Ability to work in teams or independently with minimal supervision
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail in both design and execution
  • Leadership skills to delegate tasks and when to step in
  • Exhibits the spirit of Ut Prosim
  • Ability to manage competing priorities



Who you will be working with:
This position works closely with the MSLoC leadership team and the team of advisors within the school. The MLSoC leadership consists of our school director, department heads, and program chairs. MLSoC is home to two undergraduate degrees, Building Construction, and Construction Engineering and Management, as well as several graduate degrees. Our school trains future leaders in the construction industry and pushes toward innovation through technology, diversity in the industry, and safety.

The Graphic Design Intern will report directly to the Communications and Industry Relations Manager who organizes, creates, and develops school events and engagement opportunities. This person interfaces with students and companies to create opportunities for partnerships. She also runs the school’s marketing efforts on social media, in articles, print, and on the website. She previously worked in news where she won a regional Emmy award for her work.

In this position, you will be able to have your designs seen by Virginia Tech leaders, Blacksburg community members, students, construction industry members, and more. Much of this role allows for finished products that get made into items for others.
