Campus internEXP - Prototyping Studio Exhibition Intern

The Studios in the University Libraries are looking for a knowledgeable student for a paid
internship opportunity in Fall 2023. Persons hired into this position will be provided the
opportunity to learn and explore the tools and resources in the Prototyping Studio to create an
exhibit piece for a local Pre-K institution, children’s museum, or University Libraries department.
The intern will work with stakeholders in the partnering business to identify, design, build, and
install their creation as a feature for their facility. This position will allow the intern to practice
communication and problem solving skills in a project based environment and a real world
client. They will also be able to learn advanced CNC tools, laser cutting, 3D printing, 3D
scanning, vacuum forming, as well as the many other tools in the Prototyping Studio as needed
for completion of their exhibit.

The Prototyping Studio will serve as the home for this position. The intern will be integrated into the
Prototyping Studio Consulting cohort for the duration of the position. This will allow the intern
access to a group of peers with experience in the studio's tools and technologies to present ideas during the project timeline and afford a critique and review process to help direct creative work. This studio, located in Newman Library, serves as the “open to all” makerspace on campus and promotes an attitude of accessibility and creativity to its workers and patrons. The space is considered an informal work space for casual attire and business casual attire for meeting with clients.

The Exhibition Intern will report to the Prototyping Studio Manager, who has extensive experience in creative design, developing and managing experiential learning spaces, and makerspace technologies.

Overview of the Studios
In order to provide students and patrons access to emerging technologies and collaborative
spaces for creative work, the University Libraries have created a series of studios all focused on
facilitating innovation. The library studios provide free access to advanced hardware and
software, and encourage an atmosphere of play and discovery. Student employee positions
entail interacting with all patrons of the studio, regardless of race, gender, or status, in a
welcoming and friendly manner. Patrons will range from those with no experience with
technology to those very familiar with the equipment and software that the Studios provide

Duties
● 40% - Design and document an exhibit based on the client’s constraints and needs
● 20% - Build a physical version of the exhibit to be displayed at a desired location
● 20% - Learn and/or utilize tools available in the Prototyping Studio
● 10% - Work with subject matter experts to develop the exhibit concept and content
● 10% - Work with external clients to develop professional communication skills and
scope/schedule/cost understanding

Required Qualifications
● Strong communication skills
● The ability to work independently or collaboratively
● Experience with some makerspace technologies
● Strong note-taking and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications
● Creative Technologies or Industrial Design major
● Experience writing documentation for a non-technical audience
● Experience with a wide range of makerspace technologies
● Digital modeling skills

Work Hours
Minimum 10 hours per week. Flexible to meet the needs of the successful applicant.

Pay Rate
$14.00 per hour. Federal work study students eligible.
