Campus InternEXP - Studios Technical Writer Intern

The Studios in the University Libraries are looking for a talented student with experience in Professional and Technical Writing for a paid internship opportunity starting Fall 2023. The Studios, which span several library spaces that offer emerging technologies, media production, and prototyping tools, is in the process of creating and refining a knowledgebase that consists of training documentation for internal employees and equipment guides for patrons. This position will offer experience writing scripts for training videos and creating multimodal documentation for the use of advanced equipment and tools. 

The Studios Technical Writer intern will work closely with the Studios Network Coordinator on choosing directions for the knowledgebase, scheduling, and payroll needs. The Coordinator has worked in the University Libraries for five years and has skills in managing a team, organizing projects, and developing training instruction. The Coordinator will offer feedback and guidance on all documentation that the intern completes. The intern will also make connections across the library and the Studios to gain experience with the tools, technologies, and processes they are documenting. The Coordinator will be available in person and over digital communications according to the intern’s needs. 

Overview of the Studios
In order to provide students and patrons access to emerging technologies and collaborative spaces for creative work, the University Libraries have created a series of studios all focused on facilitating innovation. The library studios provide free access to advanced hardware and software, and encourage an atmosphere of play and discovery. Student employee positions entail interacting with all patrons of the studio, regardless of race, gender, or status, in a welcoming and friendly manner. Patrons will range from those with no experience with technology to those very familiar with the equipment and software that the Studios provide access to. Duties
  • Writing and adapting documentation and scripts
  • Recording and editing videos
  • Producing hyperlinked documentation
  • Taking photos for use in documentation
  • Talking with Studio Managers about their documentation needs
  • Making sure all branding and accessibility guidelines are followed

Required Qualifications
  • Technical writing experience/coursework
  • Strong communication skills
  • Basic understanding of photography and lighting
  • Ability to follow branding and formatting guidelines
  • Experience with word processing software such as Google Docs, Adobe InDesign, etc.

Preferred Qualifications 
  • English and/or Professional and Technical Writing major
  • Experience with video production equipment, including hardware and software
  • Experience photographing equipment for use in technical documentation
  • An understanding of accessibility concerns with various media types 

Work Hours
10 hours per week. Flexible to meet the needs of the successful applicant. Some remote work may be available, depending on the candidate and project needs. 

Location
Hybrid remote and in-person work. Remote work can be completed at home or on campus. In-person work will occur at Newman Library.

Dress Code
Casual. No pajamas or sweaty gym clothes. 

Pay Rate
$14.00 per hour. Federal work study students eligible.
