Campus internEXP - Student Coordinator for VT Women Connect

The student coordinator works collaboratively on VT Women Connect programming. VT Women Connect is aligned with the mission of the ACE Virginia Network of Women in Higher Ed or “The Virginia Network” and hosts activities supporting that mission. The Virginia Network identifies, develops, advances, and supports women in higher education at the national, state, and local levels. We do this through conferences and networking events. Goals include promoting women’s leadership, creating a climate in which women can participate equally with men in setting public agendas, facilitating connections among women, and fostering strategic alliances and facilitating effective partnerships between women and men in the workplace (adapted from virginianetwork.org).

Position overview:
  • This paid internship ($15/hour) runs the 2023-2024 academic year, beginning August 2023.
  • The intern will meet bi-weekly with the supervisor and the State Chair for The Virginia Network.
  • Works 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters (flexible) between the hours of 8:00 – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Training will be provided on event details, policies and procedures, event dress codes, professionalism, and inclusive practices.
  • Intern will determine a weekly schedule at the beginning of each semester.
  • Position is on-site (with the option for remote work opportunities)
  • Dress for your day policy (casual for most days, business casual for events)

Job Description
  • Develop a social media campaign.
  • Update the VT Women Connect Directory.
  • Assist with events, programs, and related processes including creating nametags, setting up, tabling, and breaking down.
  • Communicate with Virginia Network Institutional Representatives and refreshed leadership.
  • Assist with event assessment and data analysis.
  • Other administrative duties as student coordinator’s interest emerge and as are needed.

Required qualifications:
  • Enrolled in the Campus InternEXP program and CEP 3084
  • MS Office proficiency that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or the ability to learn quickly.
  • Experience working with publication software (Canva, Publisher).
  • Social media savvy (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.
  • Attention to and interest in diversity and advancing the careers of women
  • Experience working with a survey site (Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, etc.)

Necessary skills include:
Strong communication skills, project/event management experience, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently while also collaborating and working on a team, willingness to contribute new ideas, adaptability, professionalism, and a spirit of Ut Prosim.

Who you will be working with:
The Student Coordinator reports to the Program Coordinator who manages several women-focused programs as well as New Faculty Welcome, faculty recognition processes, and the periodic review and search and hiring processes for senior administrators. She has been at Virginia Tech for almost ten years and on the Faculty Affairs team for over six. She graduated from Concord University in 2007 with English and Journalism degrees and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration and a graduate certificate in higher education administration. She values a good balance of school, work, family, and fun.

The student coordinator will work closely with the State Chair for the ACE Virginia Network, Dr. Leanna Blevins, and Virginia Tech’s Institutional Representatives: Heidi Lane and Mary Grace Campos.

The student coordinator will also be working with both the Faculty Affairs team in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and with the Women’s Center; these teams work closely together on overlapping programming. The student coordinator will work primarily out of the Women’s Center, which is in a Washington Street house that does not require a parking pass.

The intern will make connections across the university, have access to mentors in a variety of fields, and have meaningful conversations with women in high levels of leadership. The intern will develop networking and presentation skills with high-level administrators. Many of the events that the Student Coordinator will have the ability to attend will include meals, which is always a nice perk!
