Data Analyst

Rate: $14/hr

Hrs/Week: 10-15 hours a week

Position Summary: The data analyst works with the Center for Educational Networks and Impacts (CENI) within the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) to conduct research and evaluation. Duties include data entry, data collection, data analysis, as well as creating written reports and data visualizations of analyses. This paid internship ($14.00/hour) is for the fall semester, beginning August 2023, with an opportunity to extend the internship or a paid wage position based on successful performance. The intern will meet bi-weekly with the Associate Director, and work up to 10-15 hours a week during the fall semester (flexible) between the hours of 9 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday. Training will be provided on data entry, collection, and analysis, professionalism, and writing reports and presenting data. The intern will determine a weekly schedule at the beginning of each semester in collaboration with the supervisor, and the position is on-site. The dress policy is casual for most days, and business casual for meetings and events.

25% data entry and data collection 
50% data analysis
25% communication and reporting

 Required Qualifications and Necessary Skills:
- Ability to learn new technology quickly
- Must have experience creating graphs and charts in software such as Microsoft Excel
- Must have excellent attention to detail
- Time management skills
- Professionalism and interpersonal/people skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

 Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with data management
- Experience with data visualization
- Ability to create flyers using a software program such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
- Previous experience working with teachers and/or youth (minors)

Who you will be working with: CENI (ceni.icat.vt.edu) houses ICAT’s education work related to outreach and engagement, research and evaluation, and partnership and advocacy. We create safe, fun, and educational events with community members from school systems, museums, and other educational institutions and conduct research to advance STEM education workforce development from early childhood through professional practice. Dr. Chelsea Haines, the supervisor, has more than 10 years of supervisory experience with undergraduate student employees, and has worked as an instructor and academic advisor. She enjoys helping students self-assess their competency development, reflect on their learning, and prepare to articulate competencies to future employers. Dr. Haines is an experienced evaluator who has taught assessment and evaluation courses at Virginia Tech and has worked with the NACE Career Readiness Competencies in undergraduate courses and co-curricular experiences. She enjoys working with data and teaching others how to collect, analyze, and report meaningful data. Dr. Haines’ enjoyment in her work is contagious. She makes sure that the students she works with are not only learning but that they are enjoying and finding meaning in their work. Outside of work, Dr. Haines loves spending time outside with her family, friends, and miniature dachshund, Bella. 

Perks of the internship: The data analyst will enhance their written and oral communication skills with a wide range of audiences. They will develop data entry, data collection, and data analysis skills, which are in demand by a variety of industries and employers. They will work with a small team that is invested in improving society through education, receive mentorship, be asked to provide input on decisions, and have the opportunity to grow in and share their own skills and knowledge. They will have the opportunity to create products that demonstrate their ability to work with data and communicate findings for inclusion in samples of work portfolios.
