Virginia Tech Housing and Residence Life hosts a variety of Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) to bridge curricular and co-curricular learning. In LLCs, students live in designated sections of the same residence hall in order to create a unique, robust community. Over time, LLCs have grown and continue to grow at Virginia Tech with a long-term goal of two-thirds of residential students being in one of these programs.
In collaboration with Africana Studies and the Black Cultural Center (BCC), the Ujima Living-Learning Community (LLC) provides students with resources and a support system that enriches the Black student experience. Located in Peddrew-Yates Hall, Ujima focuses on cultural enrichment and academic excellence for students of all backgrounds to partake in programming and dialogue about Black identity, culture, and history. This program offers students academic support and access to campus resources designed to help them succeed, networking opportunities and engagement with Black faculty and staff, cultural excursions and field trips to further explore identity, and connections to other resources that emphasize Black culture such as clubs, organizations, leadership opportunities on campus. Position Overview:
- This paid internship ($13.00/hour) runs through the 2023-2024 academic year, beginning August 2023. A weekly schedule will be set at the beginning of each semester.
- Work up to 10 hours a week in person during the fall and spring semesters (flexible) between the hours of 10 AM – 7 PM, Monday – Friday.
- Dress Code will be casual for most days, and business casual for special meetings and events.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Ujima LLC Director with the development and implementation of programmatic and co-curricular activities.
- Develop and coordinate large-scale projects such as recruitment events, cultural excursions, community service opportunities, academic exploration excursions, service learning, community development, and campus collaborations.
- Manage community announcements that inform Ujima LLC residents of what opportunities are available both on campus and nationwide for experiential learning and professional development.
- Assist with developing and designing marketing and social media content for recruitment, events, and special projects.
Required Qualifications
- Full-time student status at Virginia Tech.
- Use of discretion with confidential records and sensitive situations.
- Creativity and innovation: this position will require an abundance of innovative brainstorming, new ideas, and problem-solving as well as making various flyers, PowerPoints, posters, and advertisements for students, faculty, and alumni.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience planning events and managing large-scale projects.
- Good organizational skills and an ability to work independently toward deadlines on multiple projects.
Who you will be working with:
Ujima LLC interns will be working directly with the Director of the Ujima LLC who creates and coordinates programs that serve underserved students with resources and opportunities that promote professional development and academic success at Virginia Tech. In addition, interns will work directly with future and current Ujima LLC residents during our weekly community engagement activities and annual community events such as Kwanzaa, Faculty and Alumni Meet & Greets, and cultural excursions.
