Job Description Summary

As a Research Engineer in the Aero-Thermal and Mechanical Systems organization, you will work with the engineering team in the design, analysis, testing, and validation of rotating machinery components for electrical and turbomachinery systems.

This role will be aligned to the Advanced Research Center focused on innovating for the Aviation industry.

Aviation Research will continue to play a vital role in supporting the industry through a historic recovery while shaping the future of flight. We invent the future of flight, lift people up and bring them home safely. Our commitment to lead the industry, to keep safe the flying public and the armed forces, and to lift up one another and our communities, remains our north star. Our purpose is what ties us to one another and gives meaning to our work.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Execute rotating machinery design projects in the aviation sector.
  • Work in the design, analysis, and testing of rotating machinery components and systems including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables.
  • Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews.
  • Provide expertise to help resolve technical challenges across the organization.
  • Collaborate in the development of internal and external project proposals and initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge in technical focus areas.
  • Provide technical development across the organization through effective coaching/mentoring.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD or MS with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics.
  • Experience with the design, analysis (including finite element analysis) and testing of rotating machinery components (e.g., shafts, bearings, dampers, couplings, seals, gears, etc.) including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections in turbomachinery and electrical machines.
  • Experience in conceptual design, build up and validation of full-scale rotating machinery incorporating new or experimental technology.
  • Experience in conceiving, developing, and carrying out experiments in rotating component hardware and transferring component level tests into full scale hardware solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Execution mindset and sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment.

Desired Characteristics:
  • Proficiency using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo) and finite element analysis using ANSYS.
  • Extensive testing of rotating components, data acquisition, data reduction and design validation. Proficiency using ADRE and LMS data acquisition and reduction systems.
  • Experience in system modeling - coupling of fluid, thermal, and structural analyses.
  • Rotor support structural design experience.

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.
