Research Engineer - Mechatronics - Aviation Research

Job Description Summary

As a Research Engineer - Mechatronics in the Aero-Thermal and Mechanical Systems organization, you will work with the engineering team in the design, analysis, testing, and validation of mechanical systems for wide range of applications in the aviation sector. Application areas include power generation and storage, electric machines and drives, inspection/repair robotics, and propulsion systems.

Aviation Research will continue to play a vital role in supporting the industry through a historic recovery while shaping the future of flight. We invent the future of flight, lift people up and bring them home safely. Our commitment to lead the industry, to keep safe the flying public and the armed forces, and to lift up one another and our communities, remains our north star. Our purpose is what ties us to one another and gives meaning to our work.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Execute projects focused on electromechanical systems, mechanical linkages, and pneumatic and hydraulic systems, in the aviation sector.
  • Work in the design, selection, analysis, system integration, and testing of robotic manipulators, sensors, actuators, controllers, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and electromechanical systems, including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables.
  • Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews.
  • Provide expertise to help resolve technical challenges across the organization.
  • Collaborate in the development of internal and external project proposals and initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge in technical focus areas.
  • Provide technical development across the organization through effective coaching/mentoring.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or MS with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or Applied Mechanics.
  • Experience with the design, selection, analysis, fabrication and testing of electromechanical systems (e.g., robotic manipulators, hydraulic/pneumatic circuits, mechatronic sensors, and actuators) including conceptual design, detailed design, fabrication, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections in machine design.
  • Experience in conceptual design, build up and validation of integrated electromechanical machines or systems incorporating new or experimental technology.
  • Experience in conceiving, developing, and carrying out experiments in mechatronic systems and transferring component level tests into full scale hardware solutions.
  • Experience in designing, building, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical and mechatronic systems, including hardware and control software.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Execution mindset and sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment.
