API offers students a wonderful opportunity to experience the Portuguese culture and way of life through internships abroad in Lisbon, Portugal. With a spectacular Atlantic coastline, Portugal sits on the sunny southwest corner of Europe, but this tiny nation – a pioneer in maritime exploration — occupies a central place in world history.
Portugal has been a crossroads of cultures for three thousand years – a fact reflected in the national language, food, music, and arts. Lisbon has exceptional nightlife, award-winning beaches, great cuisine, and is ranked as one of the most affordable and safest of European destinations. Whether you’re into music, futbol (soccer), surfing, art museums, or history, you’ll find a warm welcome from the Portuguese, who are eager to share their unique culture with you!

API will coordinate an internship placement with an international organization that meets your professional, academic, and personal goals. Our programming will support your success and engage you in activities to refine specific skills. Our on-site staff will orient you to the international workplace culture and guide you through in-person and virtual cultural workshops and local visits. Capstone your experience by earning a digital badge that you can add to your LinkedIn profile, e-portfolio, personal websites, digital resumes, and more!
Full-time internships require a commitment of 35 hours per week. Optional credit is available for an additional fee.
Our Fall Internships are offered over 8 weeks, 10 weeks, or 12 weeks.
All summer internship sessions are 8 weeks only.

Fashion Merchandising Internship
The intern will support the team in visual merchandising, fashion buying, and fashion marketing. Fashion Industry InternshipThis placement was at a major fashion and textile museum. The internship duties include serving as a gallery guide for exhibitions, fashion buying, merchandising, and trend forecasting, supporting operations at museum events including workshops, and social media marketing.
Mechanical Engineering Internship
This organization is responsible for engineering design, sustainable design, and manufacturing. In partnership with a local university, this organization is the only national trade association for companies that manufacture, supply, and install associated motor and control systems. Solar shading is increasingly being used to effectively control the internal environment of buildings by helping to reduce heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. This internship will include working with the company and faculty supervisors in a partnership of knowledge transfer, looking at energy and heating in a building, and considering consumption rates in high rises.
Mechanical Engineering Internship - 2
The placement includes a combination of responsibilities to support the team in renewable energy and in particular, the design of small and large composite blades for wind turbine generators. The intern will also receive exposure to the development of the crack propagation model known as the cohesive zone model (CZM), which is a modeling technique that is becoming a standard feature of many advanced commercial FEA software such as ABAQUS and ANSYS. Additional projects in composites will be assigned based on the project timeline and process understanding. Veterinary Science and Zoology Internship. The intern will gain experience in different aspects of the veterinary field, conservation, and wildlife parks, shadowing the warden with daily responsibilities, conducting surveys, and doing a research project related to particular interests. The intern will also support event planning and assist in observation clinics with lab exposure and evaluation.
ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE PLACEMENTS
Accounting and finance internships abroad are a great way to gain valuable work experience in an international setting and are available in all our destinations. There is a wide range of opportunities working with companies and organizations of all sizes. Teaching and education-related applicants may need to be flexible with destination, and program dates as school academic calendars abroad vary greatly by location. Most destinations in the northern hemisphere have a similar calendar and experience extended summer breaks during May, June, July, and August making placements limited. The Southern Hemisphere locations are a great alternative during this time of year as this is their winter months.

Students applying for STEM-related placements are very likely to be placed in a research-based internship. Research placements are strong opportunities to learn about cutting-edge technologies before they are put into commercial practice, and are also ideal for boosting graduate school applications.
All STEM placements must be a minimum of 8 weeks, and in some cases may need to be longer.
Note that many employers will only accept interns who demonstrate at least two years of completed university-level coursework (sophomore status or higher) and a 3.0 GPA.
VETERINARY SCIENCE AND ZOOLOGY PLACEMENTS
Imagine spending a summer or semester strengthening your resume by completing an internship with a veterinary clinic, wildlife park, or zoo abroad.
