Materials/Metallurgy Engineer Intern

  • Job Description:
  • Opportunity to work in Materials Engineering within the Mechanical Subsystems Directorate (MSD).  This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to engage subject matter experts and perform hands-on-testing of a wide variety of materials to support design, development, and production. The primary responsibilities will include, assessing materials based on conformance to specifications as well as conducting tests to support production and failure analysis activities in a laboratory environment.  This will involve following standard written protocols, metallurgical analysis, destructive physical analysis and writing reports.  Tasks will require careful attention to detail and critical thinking.  Candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements.  This candidate will become part of a multi-disciplined team.

  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.
  • Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Education: Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in one of the following disciplines:

  •  Material Science
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • This position requires 12 months or less of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships).
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Laboratory coursework or hands-on experience with lab analysis
  • Required Education and Skills: 

  • Chemistry major with completion of General and Organic Chemistry including corresponding lab coursework. 
  • Good communication, interpersonal, planning, teaming and time management skills
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance
  • This position requires 12 months or less of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships). ​
  • Desired Education and Skills: 

  • Material Science and Polymer Science Understanding, with knowledge of material testing/chemical analysis such as hardness, adhesion tests, sample preparation, cross sectioning, FTIR, TGA, DSC, DMA, etc.
  • Understanding of material safety datasheets and Military Specifications
  • Current/Active DoD clearance or SSBI
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues who represent a diversity of work and conflict resolution styles
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and complete large scale multi-disciplined scientific based projects including failure analysis investigations
  • Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses
