Spring Co-op/High Throughput Automation

GSK

Department Description

GlaxoSmithKline, a global pharmaceutical company, has committed to drive innovation by expanding a state-of-the-art automation laboratory. The use of automated high-throughput robotic laboratory platforms in research and development improves efficiency in the drug development process. The ongoing vision of laboratory automation is one where implementation:
• Enables our scientists to minimize resource requirements and maximize the experimental design space to rapidly make better-informed decisions.
• Drives the reduction of attrition by maximizing our knowledge, capabilities, and delivers more robust workflows to increase quality development of medicines.

As part of this strategy, a multi-million-dollar robotic laboratory has been built in Collegeville PA to support the development, evaluation, and optimization of drug products. This team actively drives how automation is applied to accelerate the medicinal pipeline, ultimately delivering quality, life-saving medicine to patients, faster.

Job Description

The Spring Co-op/High Throughput Automation role will deepen experience in laboratory automation, along with various analytical chemistry techniques, to deliver value to GSK medicinal compounds. Accordingly, the student will partner with an experienced member of the scientific team and will be mentored throughout the co-op cycle to learn how to utilize innovative automated robotic platforms and experimental workflows with the following purpose:
  • Perform experiments for key pharmaceutical compounds primarily in a research laboratory environment, such as solubility, stability and crystallization by successfully utilizing a range of specialized robots; enhancing drug product design across all phases of development.
  • Explore a wide range of experimental procedures and projects by working on new pharmaceutical assets from throughout the pipeline, ranging from discovery to clinical trials.
  • Write protocols for new automation workflows using robot-specific user interfaces for laboratory instruments from Unchained Labs, Mettler-Toledo, Agilent, Chemspeed, Andrew Alliance, and Hamilton.
  • Apply appropriate analytical techniques such as Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Microscopy and X-Ray Powder Diffraction to explore the physical properties of materials, excipients of pharmaceutical relevance, and chemical reactions of synthetic intermediates.
  • Develop robust lab automation protocols and analytical methods to meet the needs of the analysts, chemists, engineers and formulation scientists.
  • Organize, evaluate, and present data in an effective and scientific manner using advanced software visualization tools.
  • Increase experimental efficiency and throughput while upholding high standards of scientific quality and integrity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar disciplines.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the assignment.
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of analytical instrumentation in support of drug molecule development.
  • Experience working in a chemistry-focused laboratory environment.
  • Interest in working with automated robotic platforms.
  • High learning agility with an ability and willingness to effectively manage first-time challenges in changing conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
  • Must provide your own funding for relocation and commuting.
  • If your skillsets are a match for this role, you will be contacted by our recruitment team with next steps to complete our internal World of GSK Assessment.
  • Please note, you must receive a passing score to move forward in the interview process. Once your assessment is complete, a recruiter will review your results and be in touch with next steps.
