Data Science Graduate Summer Internship - Corporate (Hybrid)

Working out of our Chevy Chase, MD/Washington DC office, GEICO is looking for bright, driven graduate students to join our Graduate Data Science Internship for Summer 2023! 
 
Qualified interns will work with our Data Science team to solve problems across GEICO, from Marketing to Claims and Underwriting, and are responsible for developing and driving strategic modeling initiatives. We see our projects through the entire data science life cycle, from problem definition to data exploration, data cleaning, modeling, analysis, and deployment into production systems. We maintain a close partnership with IT to ensure that our models can be deployed quickly and monitored in a flexible deployment framework.  
  
During this summer-long internship, you will be a member of this diverse and highly skilled team. On any given day, you may be exploring new data sets with a business or IT partner, learning the intricacies of a business process, building models, or coordinating the productionization of a model. You will use a variety of tools (including SQL, Python, R, Spark, and shell scripting) in a modern cloud-based environment. You’ll work in a highly collaborative, team environment where you will quickly develop wide ranging exposure to new methods and best practices for conducting data science in a commercial environment. While participating in the internship program, students are evaluated and given consideration for full time post graduate employment.  
 
Required Qualifications: 
  • Current Masters or PhD Student with an expected graduation date of December 2023 or May 2024 
  • GPA of at least a 3.3 both overall and in major (Please upload your resume and all (undergraduate and graduate, if applicable) unofficial transcripts when submitting your application.) Currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in a quantitative discipline, such as statistics, data science, computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, etc.   
  • Solid understanding and experience with advanced statistics and modern machine learning predictive techniques such as GLMs, decision trees, forests, boosted ensembles, neural networks, deep learning, etc. 
  • Strong coding skills using common data science tools, such as Python (strongly preferred), R, Linux/Unix command line and shell scripting, etc. 
  • Strong skills in data processing using SQL, Hive, Impala, Spark, or equivalent querying language 
  • Familiarity with distributed storage and big data computing technology (AWS, Hadoop, Spark, etc.) (preferred) 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Passion for extracting hidden insights and building machine learning systems that enhance business outcomes 
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure Machine learning or any cloud based machine learning service (preferred) 

Before the final interview, candidates will be expected to submit previous work displaying experience working with a Classification or Regression project using a machine learning model to solve a business problem or answer an analytical question, such as: 
  • A Kaggle competition submission 
  • A Personal Project 
  • A project completed for a class  
  • Please submit in R or Python & include a link to your code repo 
  • Please prepare a presentation covering your methodology and conclusions
