Spring Co-op/Safety Pharmacology

Description of Department:

The Non-Clinical Safety (NCS) department within GSK's Research & Development division is responsible for characterizing the safety profile of all compounds in development. This position is in the Safety Pharmacology (SP) Unit of NCS. The remit of Safety Pharmacology includes identifying & characterizing hazards, providing risk assessments, & investigating mechanisms of action as related to organ function liabilities primarily within the cardiovascular, respiratory, & central nervous system (CNS) domains in accordance with ICH S7A & S7B.


Job Description:

We are seeking a candidate who is interested in learning the processes & procedures for evaluating drug-induced effects on major organ function. Position term is 6 months (with possibility to extend). The co-op scientist will perform tasks & receive mentorship in the following areas:
  • Assist with in vivo Safety Pharmacology cardiovascular, respiratory and/or CNS studies. Including, but not limited to, preparation & running of studies (setting up, operating & maintaining specialized equipment), data analysis & reporting (written summary / data visualization/ data verification, compliance with GLP standard).
  • Assist in all aspects of studies from conception to study design to application of experimental pharmacological methodologies in order to evaluate major organ functions (cardiovascular, respiratory, CNS), including, & not limited to, literature searches & written summary, develop & refine experimental methods, PPT presentation.
  • For CNS studies, the co-op scientist will assist with investigating neurobehavioral effects in rodents. The candidate will have the opportunity to employ a novel automated video analysis assay to examine multiple parameters, including locomotion, social behavior, & physiological homeostasis (body temperature).

Basic Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in biology or related majors.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 6 month co-op.
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.
  • Willing to work with animals.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral & written, & willing to learn.
  • Evidence of leadership & teamwork skills.
  • Track record of achievement & leadership in work and/or extracurricular activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • While not necessary, any type of prior lab experience is a plus.
  • Majors in the sciences at an accredited university.
  • Successful completion of at least one year of college level courses.
  • Comfortable working in an environment where lab animals are utilized for experimental purposes, is preferred.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
  • Must provide your own funding for relocation and commuting.
