Undergrad Technical Intern – Marine/Wind Energy and Environmental Effects

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to the values of Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Courage. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven people come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!

At PNNL, you will find an exciting research environment and excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible work schedules and telework options. PNNL is located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and affordable cost of living. The Lab’s campus is only a 45-minute flight (or ~3 hour drive) from Seattle or Portland, and is serviced by the convenient PSC airport, connected to 8 major hubs.

Overview
The Coastal Sciences Division, headquartered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Sequim Marine Research Operations on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, is the Department of Energy's only marine research laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation's energy, environmental and security future.

Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, ecotoxicology and biotechnology—and more recently, national and homeland security—the MSL is emerging as a leader in these three areas:
o  Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy
o  Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources
o  Protecting coastal environments from security threats

Responsibilities
PNNL has an extensive history of addressing key challenges faced by the marine (e.g., wave, tidal) and wind energy (offshore and land-based) industries. PNNL’s marine energy research program covers environmental effects, resource characterization, supporting the blue economy with renewables, data management and analysis, and international research dissemination. PNNL’s wind energy research program covers environmental effects, monitoring technology development, and grid integration. As part of these programs, PNNL manages the Tethys and Tethys Engineering databases which collect and disseminate information about the environmental effects of marine and wind energy, and technical aspects of marine energy, respectively.

This position will primarily support the Tethys and Tethys Engineering databases by identifying and adding new content and curating existing content. The successful candidate will develop a broad foundational understanding of the environmental effects and/or technical aspects of marine and wind energy. This position is intended to provide a mutually beneficial arrangement where the candidate will receive highly valuable experience working in a world class laboratory while staff will benefit from having more time to focus on advanced tasks and project work.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
  • Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates should be actively working towards a B.S. degree in a physical or biological science field.
  • Staff will rely heavily on the candidate to be responsible, to perform assigned tasks in a correct and efficient manner, and to communicate proactively in a remote setting.
  • Candidates must have preferred overall GPA of 3.0.

Additional Information
This position will be remote. Hours are flexible to accommodate the student taking classes during the internship.
