Seagate Intern - Process Development - Summer 2022

About our group:

The Parting & Cleaning Development team within the Slider Development Engineering organization develops grinding and cleaning technologies. The precision grinding processes take the incoming wafer of recording heads and slices them into bars for additional processing and ultimately dices the bars into individual recording heads. Various aqueous and solvent based cleaning technologies are employed throughout the slider processing line to ensure clean and defect free parts are shipped to downstream operations.
 
The Seagate MN development site has a slider pilot line which mimics the manufacturing tools and processes in Korat Thailand. Our team focuses on ideas and initiatives for improving performance and productivity and is looking for an engineering student with extraordinary potential to further our team’s learning in optimization of key processes and integration strategies related to the mechanical grinding operations.
 
As an intern you will get to work with a variety of our staff, while working on real projects that contribute to the development of next generation magnetic recording heads manufacturing.


About the role - you will:

  • Develop technical understanding of leading-edge processes to machine the next generation of recording heads.
  • Learn to use industry standard tools to develop, characterize and optimize new processes.  
  • Learn how to design and execute experiments and develop sound experimental strategies.
  • Document and communicate your findings to the team and management on regular basis
  • Work with and learn from a team of experienced engineers with various engineering backgrounds.


About you:

  • Current student pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or related degree.
  • Have a working knowledge in statistics and data analysis.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently. GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Relevant course work and knowledge in computer programming and machine control would be considered an advantage.

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate.
