Seagate Intern - Laser & Light Delivery - Summer 2022

Location:  Bloomington, MN, US

About our group:

Seagate is looking for an intern to join the Laser & Light Delivery CAG (Characterization & Analytics Group) team that is part of the HAMR development program (https://www.seagate.com/innovation/hamr/). HAMR is the future of HDD recording technology growth and is enabled by an integrated laser that is used to energize a plasmonic near-field transducer. Our team is responsible for integrating laser diodes into read/write heads, characterizing lasers/integrated-photonic systems, and developing optical-system metrology.


About the role - you will:

A successful candidate will be responsible for working with CAG and design teams to answer questions related to HAMR integrated laser performance. This may include but is not limited to:
  • Leverage existing tools to collect, analyze and report data
  • Develop custom optical/thermal experiments
  • Analyze large data sets from factory test systems


About you:

  • Student pursuing an MS or PhD degree in Physics, Lasers/Optics, or a relevant Engineering degree.
  • Hands-on experience and familiarity with design and/or characterization of lasers and/or optical systems is preferred.
  • Looking to gain experience in the ‘test’ phase of the design/process/test cycle of integrated optics development.
  • Some experience with programming/scripting for scientific computing or test automation applications (Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, etc.)

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate.
