Seagate - Chemist Summer Intern

Location:  Longmont, CO, US

About our group:

Seagate is seeking a high-energy, collaborative chemist for a temporary summer intern position at our facility in Longmont, Colorado with start in date in May 2022. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a global team located in the US and Asia. The function of this role is to study reactions of oxidation and degradation of materials used in the writer of Hard Disk Drives in the presence of various gases and contaminants. The chemist will work with our Material Science Engineering and Advanced Product Development teams to collect and validate data for chemical reaction identification and prediction.

About the role - you will:

  • Perform laboratory testing to evaluate materials for use in the disc drive.
  • Conduct hands-on bench work to study kinetics parameters and reaction mechanisms 
  • Identify and/or quantify chemicals by various analytical chemical methods
  • Identify and quantify the release of chemical substances from the device 
  • Work-up and analyze data sets with equipment specific software and statistical analysis software 
  • Assist with maintaining and calibrating laboratory instruments and equipment 
  • Prepare reports

Your experience includes:

  • Deep knowledge of analytical chemistry 
  • Knowledge of basic safety in a chemical laboratory
  • Hands on knowledge of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), GC-MS, FTIR and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Mass Spectroscopy (MS) 
  • Wet chemistry experience (titration, liquid phase reactions) 
  • Ability to learn how to write engineering reports and presentations
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemisty, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or other related degree and enrolled in Fall 2022 courses
 
 
Colorado's 2021 Equal Pay for Equal Work Act (SB 19-085) requires we inform you of the estimated base hourly range for this position: $18-$24.50. Actual hourly range is based on fair market value of the role in the geography in which you live based on the requirements of the job and your skills. This posted salary range is a good faith and reasonable estimate, and Seagate reserves the right to adjust this range depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
