Campus internEXP - Student Marketing Specialist for Housing and Residence Life

The Student Marketing Specialist works collaboratively with the Marketing and Communications Manager for Housing and Residence Life at Virginia Tech, supporting the mission and values for the department and communicating with students, parents, alumni, and the broader public. We envision an exciting internship opportunity where the student can specialize in marketing skills they want to develop (e.g. graphic design, photography, videography, social media management, effective writing) while creating quality materials that support the department and help tell the story of why on-campus housing is important at Virginia Tech.
 
Position overview:
·      This paid internship ($10/hour for Fall 2021, $11/hour for Spring 2022) runs the 2021-2022 academic year, beginning August 2021.
·      The intern will meet either bi-weekly or weekly with the Marketing and Communications Manager.
·      The intern will work 10-20 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters (flexible).
·      The position is hybrid, with some on-site responsibilities and some responsibilities that can be fulfilled remotely.
·      The intern will receive training and hands-on experience that will help prepare them for their future career.
·      The intern will be encouraged to explore a variety of marketing skills, identifying those which they are most passionate about, and then given the opportunity to specialize in those areas with creativity and dedication.
 
Job description:
The specific job responsibilities will be fully determined in initial conversations with the HRL Marketing and Communications Manager that fully meet the goals and skills of the intern. Potential job responsibilities include:
·      Film and edit videos for the department.
·      Take photos of on-campus events, student portraits, residence halls, etc.
·      Write website copy and news articles for VT News and Housing and Residence Life’s Neighborhood Project.
·      Contribute to a photo/video library, an online resource that HRL staff can use in their own marketing efforts.
·      Create content for HRL social media accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
·      Assist in the creation and management of a new HRL TikTok account.
·      Assist in the creation of newsletters to student staff and on-campus residents.
·      Utilize graphic design in the creation of materials (e.g. flyers, posters, table cards, document proposals, presentations, etc.)
·      Assist in tracking relevant social media and website analytics over time and implementing this data in the decision-making process.
 
Required qualifications:
·      Able to represent the department and the broader institution with professionalism, courtesy, and inclusivity.
·      Evidence of strong writing, editing, interpersonal, content strategy, and marketing skills.
·      Proficient with technology and willing and able to quickly develop new skills.
·      Able to manage multiple projects and take initiative.
·      Able to work collaboratively with a team of colleagues and campus partners.
·      Able to lift and carry 50lbs.
 
Preferred qualifications:
·      Experience with photography and/or videography and the underlying principles and technology.
·      Experience with social media management for institutions, non-profits, or other organizations.
·      Experience in communications technology, visual design, marketing, or related field.
·      Demonstrated ability with the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, etc.)

As the Student Marketing Specialist, you will be joining a broad and diverse team of hundreds of employees, from student staff all the way up to leadership in Student Affairs at Virginia Tech. Work in Housing and Residence Life is fast-paced and always student-driven. Our department manages an on-campus occupancy of nearly 10,000 students and strives to create a community where everyone belongs, in the spirit of Ut Prosim.
 
Our office New Hall West (Suite 144) is open and generally staffed from 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. You will be directly supervised by the Marketing and Communications Manager for Housing and Residence Life, an alumnus of Virginia Tech who has worked for HRL for a year and a half and is passionate about utilizing diverse skills, strategies, and platforms to impact audiences and connect people with meaningful experiences. He values inspiration, creativity, organization, time management, and creating an excellent and engaging product. He is excited to find out what area of marketing you are most passionate about and to create a plan to develop your skills and experience in that area while supporting HRL.
