Campus internEXP - Events and Marketing Assistant

The Events and Marketing Assistant works collaboratively with the Events and Marketing Unit (E&M) in Career and Professional Development (CPD) at Virginia Tech. CPD educates and supports students as they explore and further understand themselves and career options, gain valuable experience, develop as professionals, and launch their post-graduation career plans. We want to help students discover and pursue a path to a fulfilling career. We do this through career advising services, workshops and presentations, and high impact programs. Position overview:

·        This paid internship ($9.50/hour in fall, $11/hour in spring) runs the 2021-2022 academic year,
beginning August 2021.
·        The intern will meet weekly with the E & M unit's assistant director.
·        Work up to 10-15 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters (flexible). Most hours should be completed between 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday, however, there is an opportunity to work outside of normal business hours.
·        Training will be provided on Virginia Tech and Career and Professional Development policies and procedures, the E&M unit, access and use of software and social media platforms, and inclusive practices.
·        Intern will determine a weekly schedule at the beginning of each semester.
·        Position can be fully remote, or a hybrid of on-site and remote. Intern and supervisor will discuss options.

Job Description

·        Manage the uploading, editing, and captioning of videos to the office YouTube channel, or other locations, as needed
·        Curate and post social media content in feed and in Stories/Reels, as well as creating new content
·        Serve as primary manager of Instagram and YouTube accounts, along with a supporting role maintaining the office Facebook and Twitter pages
·        Collaborate with marketing manager on graphic design for specific programs or events, as well as general office marketing
·        Assist with setup and logistics of both in-person and virtual events.


Required Qualifications:

·       Experience with at least one type of Adobe Creative Cloud software (InDesign, Photoshop, Premier Pro, Illustrator)
·        Graphic design experience in any of the above software and/or Canva
·       In-depth knowledge of Instagram and YouTube, along with general knowledge of Facebook and Twitter
·        Access to reliable internet connection


Preferred Qualifications:

·        Experience with video production and/or editing
·        Writing experience
·        Interest in working on both in-person and virtual events


Necessary skills include:

Strong communication skills, project/event management experience, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently while also collaborating and working on a team, willing to contribute new ideas, adaptability, professionalism and a spirit of Ut Prosim.

As the Events and Marketing Assistant you will be joining a team of 30 career services professionals dedicated to student career development. CPD values teamwork and collaboration, clear and kind communication, and a positive work environment. The Events and Marketing Assistant reports to the Assistant Director of Events and Marketing, who manages in-person and virtual events, all social media platforms, as well as oversees the E & M Unit. The assistant director has worked in higher education for more than 15 years, and has managed contracts, logistics, marketing and budgets for over 500 events. In addition to the assistant director, the assistant will work closely with the Marketing Manager to ensure university brand guidelines are being followed.
