Campus internEXP - Career Outfitters Student Coordinator

The student coordinator works collaboratively as a co-coordinator for the Career Outfitters program and shopping event in Career and Professional Development (CPD) at Virginia Tech. CPD educates and supports students as they explore and further understand themselves and career options, gain valuable experience, develop as professionals, and launch their post-graduation career plans. We want to help students discover and pursue a path to a fulfilling career. We do this through career advising services, workshops and presentations, and high impact programs. Helping students along their career development journey is why we come to work every day.
 
Position overview:
·      This paid internship ($11.00/hour in Fall 2022; $12.00/hour in Spring 2023) runs the 2021-2022 academic year, beginning August 2021 (prior to the start of Fall semester)
·      The intern will meet bi-weekly with the Program Coordinator
·      Work up to 10-12 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday (with some possible after-hours work)
·      Training will be provided on program and special event details, Career and Professional Development policies and procedures, interviewing dress codes, professionalism, career fair and interviewing preparation, merchandising, styling, and inclusive practices
·      Intern will determine a weekly schedule at the beginning of each semester
·      Position is on-site (with options for remote work opportunities, as appropriate)
·      Dress for your day policy (smart casual or casual for most days, business casual for meetings and events)
 
Job description:
·      Lead and manage the student shopping appointment schedule, and assist students by providing styling advice and alteration recommendations
·      Design a retail shopping experience for any Career Outfitters events outside of the regular program hours including pop-up shops and requested workshops
·      Set up a shopping environment including clothing and accessories to be offered and visual merchandising in the Career Outfitters shop, closet, and any special events
·      Maintain Career Outfitters shop and closet by sorting and organizing donated clothing, as well as making arrangements for donations that are unable to be used for our program
·      Contact and coordinate with local businesses and other community partners to secure clothing donations and other sponsorship opportunities
·      Co-manage and create Career Outfitters social media content throughout the year
·      Co-manage the Career Outfitters program, along with Program Coordinator
·      Assist in creating video content for the website and social media by coordinating and recruiting student models and other collaborators
·      Assist with marketing and promotions of the program and donation drives
·      Coordinate with Fashion Merchandising and Design (FMD) faculty to solicit student volunteers
·      Train student volunteers and assist with managing volunteer schedules
·      Communicate and follow-up with donors and sponsors through phone, email, hand written thank you notes, etc.
·      Assist with event assessment and data analysis
·      Assist with additional special projects, including sustainability initiatives
 
Required Qualifications:
·      Experience with a publication software (InDesign, Photoshop, Publisher, Canva, etc.)
·      Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs while climbing a ladder
 
Preferred Qualifications:
·      Fashion Merchandising and Design (FMD) student at Virginia Tech
·      Retail and merchandising experience
·      Styling, measuring, and/or alterations knowledge or experience
  
Necessary skills include:
Strong communication skills, project/event management experience, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently while also collaborating and working on a team, willing to contribute new ideas, adaptability, professionalism, and a spirit of Ut Prosim!

The Student Coordinator for Career Outfitters reports to the Program Coordinator who coordinates numerous professional development and experiential learning programs for students. The Program Coordinator helped create Career Outfitters and was once the Student Coordinator herself. She held various positions in the fashion and event industries, including retail management, professional fashion and custom stylist, event planner, and advertising/marketing account executive before coming back to Virginia Tech to work in CPD. The supervisor loves all things fashion, creating timelines, color-coding, and building relationships with students, local employers, and faculty.
