Medical Lab Science Program


THE PROGRAM:
The Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Temple Program in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is a one-year didactic and clinical training program for students who have a bachelor's degree in the sciences (4+1) or who are currently enrolled in a clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science or medical technology degree program (3+1). The mission of the program is to provide a quality, comprehensive education, to prepare skilled, competent laboratory scientists, meeting the needs of the institution and the profession. Laboratory disciplines include:
  • Hematology & Coagulation
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Medical Microbiology
  • Molecular Diagnostics
  • Bloodbanking and Transfusion Services
  • Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing
  • Immunology
  • Andrology

Students who successfully complete all course work are awarded a certificate of completion from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Temple. After receiving this certificate, students are eligible for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Scientist Board of Certification examination.
Deadline for application is December 1. The interview date for the class of 2022-23 is scheduled for January 4, 2022. More information is available at www.bswhealth.med/mls

AFTER PROGRAM GRADUATION:
The career of a Medical Laboratory Scientist includes performing and monitoring a full range of laboratory testing and analysis, assuming responsibility for problem resolution, quality control, and required equipment maintenance with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the ROLE:
  • Performs laboratory tests in compliance with department procedures and all pertinent regulatory requirements
  • Follows quality control, quality assurance, safety, and infection control procedures
  • Performs instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting
  • Accurately reports test results
  • Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies
  • Maintains effective communication and working relationships with all laboratory personnel, other disciplines, and external customers
  • Participates in laboratory projects and educational activities
  • Demonstrates and educates laboratory principles and technical skills to others

  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, protocols, and procedures

  • Ability to comprehend and communicate instructions
