Events and Marketing Intern
The Advising Events and Marketing Intern will work with professional faculty and staff in Academic Advising and Transition Support (AATS) to support multiple campus-wide events and programs. The large campus-wide events include Majors and Minors Fair, Advising Matter’s Conference, Giving Day, and Global Advising Week. The AATS Office also hires 90+ student wage positions each academic year to support multiple programs and this undergraduate intern would provide support in the planning and coordination of the group hiring interview process. AATS is also the hub of university-wide communications across multiple platforms including newsletters and social media posts to inform students, families, and VT’s advising community of important dates, information, and events as they pertain to academic advising.
This intern will be an integral part of the planning and implementation of these large-scale events. Supporting these programs will require someone willing to work and learn within a team of professional staff and other student leaders and be nimble in helping with multiple programs.
Position Description:
- This paid internship ($13.50/hour) begins August 2026 and runs through Spring 2027
- The intern will meet weekly with their supervisor, Project Coordinator for AATS, for project check-ins
- A weekly schedule will be set at the beginning of each semester for 10 hours each week (150 total for Fall and Spring semester) primarily between the hours of 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some nights and weekends required (with advance notice).
- This position requires in-person attendance during work hours
- Location: Gilbert Place 220 Gilbert Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060
- Dress for your day policy (casual for most days, business casual for meetings and events)
Job Duties:
- Assist AATS Project Coordinator with completing assigned tasks for each project (i.e. making name tags, creating marketing materials, updating programs and event materials, etc.)
- Provide day-of support to include set-up and take-down at Majors and Minors Fair, Advising Matter’s Conference, and Global Advising Week Events.
- Assist AATS Project Coordinator with the planning, coordination, and implementation of the student group interview process to include day-of support at each group hiring event (two Saturdays typically in February).
- Assist with updating monthly newsletters.
- Create regular posts and content for AATS social media accounts.
- Establish regular meetings with supervisor.
- Attend team meetings and training as allowed by class schedule.
- Other duties within AATS as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be an undergraduate student enrolled as a full-time student during the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 terms at Virginia Tech.
- Ability to work in-person, on campus, and within a flexible schedule (during the work week and including some weekend and evening times if needed).
- Must be approachable, flexible, and willing to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to manage time effectively while balancing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Experience with social media management and other related technologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work within and contribute to a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic Level: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
- Major or Minor in: Communications, Event and Experience Management, Marketing, etc.
- Experience with event planning and management to include the ability to read and interpret project schedules and familiarity with following task assignments.
- Experience preparing progress reports and project metrics tracking.
- Enthusiasm for planning and executing events.
Who You Will Be Working With:
The Events and Marketing Intern will work with our AATS Project Coordinator who has experience across multiple fields including project management, events management and hospitality, digital accessibility, and social media and marketing. The supervisor is known for being friendly, collaborative, and innovative. She enjoys excessive amounts of caffeine from Starbucks across the street and spending time with her fiancé and two dogs, Ellie and Buster!
Academic Advising and Transition Support (AATS) is a team-oriented office that coordinates academic advising across campus to include professional development and recognition opportunities for VT’s academic advisors and universitywide program designed to holistically support the integration of VT’s undergraduate students to campus. Each individual on the team helps support academic advising at Virginia Tech, whether it is through assessment, academic planning initiatives, programs for VT’s transfer students or offering advising services for VT’s students transitioning between majors.
