Synthetic Chemistry Intern

About Centrillion Technologies:

Centrillion Technologies develops advanced DNA Chips which have a wide range of applications, including whole genome sequencing, spatial biology, digital pathology, next generation genotyping, synthetic biology and DNA computing. Our world’s most advanced high resolution and highly sensitive spatial chips, chemistry, its lithographic design and encoding technologies have been licensed to 10x Genomics for spatial genomics and the spatial technologies have been commercialized as through 10x Genomics’ Visium HD spatial chips, exclusively in US and Centrillion’s Zipcode spatial chips for single cell level spatial genomics and digital pathology.

Our Palo Alto facility functions as a research institute where our team of scientists work on the latest in chemistry, biochemistry, genomics, electronics, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics.  Our current focus areas are chromosomal scale DNA sequencing, next generation genotyping, and exploratory DNA computing research.

Internship Overview:

We are currently seeking talented and motivated undergraduate and graduate students with a strong interest and prior experience in Synthetic Chemistry to join our team for a paid 2–3 months summer internship. Interns will be assigned a project that can be completed during the summer internship period. Preference will be given to students who can continue to work part-time with Centrillion during the semesters.

As the Synthetic Chemistry Intern, you will gain hands-on organic chemistry laboratory experience within a biotechnology environment working alongside our Chemistry team. This role offers the opportunity to learn how to conduct organic chemistry experiments to synthesize compounds that will be evaluated in biological assays, contributing directly to ongoing research efforts.

Interns will work with Chemistry/Material Science team, at Centrillion in Palo Alto. They will work on a project in the areas of organic chemistry; assist in traditional and contemporary organic synthesis techniques; contribute to multi step synthesis of intermediates, building blocks and final products; and perform solid phase and solution chemistry techniques.

During this internship, you will be mentored by senior scientists while taking on the following tasks:

  • Synthesis & Characterization: Perform multistep synthesis, purification, and characterization of new bioactive molecules.
  • Research Communication: Effectively summarize and communicate your research findings to the broader team.
  • Lab Safety: Execute complex laboratory procedures quickly, efficiently, and safely.

Requirements:

  • Conducting laboratory experiments in consultation with Chemistry team members
  • Acquiring and interpreting analytical data (eg. HPLC, LCMS, and NMR)
  • Keeping excellent records of experimental procedures and acquired data in lab notebook
  • Summarizing and presenting your experimental findings in group meetings
  • Ideal Candidate Profile - Highly Motivated Student Studying Synthetic Organic Chemistry (or Closely Related Field)

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's or doctoral degree in synthetic chemistry. Experience in organic synthesis and in the discovery and optimization of chemical reactions.
  • Familiarity with analytical instruments to characterize compounds such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectrometry (IR), mass spectrometry (MS), and elemental analysis.
  • Familiarity with, or ability to quickly learn, a wide range of techniques and reaction types such as low temperature reactions, inert atmosphere, metal-catalyzed cross coupling, hydrogenation, etc.
  • Knowledge of purification methods and experience in the characterization of organic compounds, especially NMR and mass spectroscopy.
  • Specify, procure, and evaluate manufacturing components, materials, reagents, and systems.
  • Manage pilot production tools, instruments, and systems, ensuring their calibration and maintenance.

Compensation:

This is a paid internship. The compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

Application Process:

Interested candidates should submit a resume, a cover letter detailing their interest and relevant experience, and contact information for at least two references. In your cover letter, please explain your rationale for seeking a summer internship, and if you are a graduate student, make sure to confirm that you have the permission of your advisor to seek a summer internship. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and candidates are encouraged to apply early for the best chance of consideration.
