Co-op, Structural Biology

About the Role: 

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2026. Resume review begins in October 2025. 

 

The structural biology team in Biogen’s Physical Biochemistry department seeks a 6-month co-op during the first half of 2026. We are a small but mighty team with a combined 30+ years of experience in structural biology techniques including both X-ray crystallography and CryoEM. Our in-house crystallography facility includes a number of robotics platforms, and our electron microscopy suite includes a negative stain microscope, a Vitrobot, and a newly upgraded Glacios TEM for solving high-resolution structures. We support all modalities at Biogen, ranging from small molecule-focused projects to biologics engineering campaigns. During your time at Biogen, you will have a direct impact on important projects, receive direct training in state-of-the-art techniques, and have opportunities to build a professional network. Additionally, you will receive exposure to the greater scientific community and drug discovery efforts at Biogen through weekly lunch and learns, as well as various seminars. 

 

What You’ll Do: 

As a co-op, you will work alongside other members of the structural biology team at Biogen’s Cambridge, MA facility. Day-to-day responsibilities will include biophysical analysis of protein samples prior to structural characterization, preparation of samples for CryoEM analysis, computational analysis of structural data, use of cutting-edge structure prediction and computational design tools, and maintaining an accurate and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook. This role will include hands-on training in both protein crystallography and CryoEM. 

 

Who You Are: 

A driven, curious individual looking to gain practical experience in all aspects of modern structural biology. The successful candidate will the following knowledge, skills and experience 

A passion for structural biology 

A foundational understanding of protein structure and function 

Basic understanding of common protein characterization techniques 

Basic wet lab experience 

Familiarity with Linux 

Interest in learning computational methods for structure prediction and design 

Strong organizational and time management skills 

Effective communication and problem solving skills 

 

To participate in the Biogen Internship or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 

At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date. 

Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship. 

 

Education Requirements 

Upper-level students in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering, Biology, and Chemistry (as well as related majors).  


 

Job Level: Internship


Additional Information

 

The base compensation range for this role is: $23.00-$27.00


The actual hourly wage offered will consider the candidate’s current academic level and degree candidacy, inclusive of Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, JD, MD, PhD and MBA programs. It will comply with state or local minimum wage requirements specific to the job location.
